Bridges<br />
Bridges connect districts, places and regions.<br />
Their design is affected by <strong>the</strong> quest of eng<strong>in</strong>eers<br />
to draw elaborate bridges across rivers or<br />
valleys and often express this function symbolically.<br />
Illum<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g a bridge emphasises its symbolic<br />
nature <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> even<strong>in</strong>g and at night. For this<br />
reason, light<strong>in</strong>g designers often approach this<br />
task by pick<strong>in</strong>g up on <strong>the</strong> static characteristics<br />
of <strong>the</strong> construction. Depend<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> typology<br />
– whe<strong>the</strong>r cont<strong>in</strong>uous girder, truss, arched or<br />
suspension bridge – <strong>the</strong> design elements can be<br />
accentuated appropriately us<strong>in</strong>g light. This also<br />
creates a characteristic appearance at night<br />
which is visible from afar.<br />
Due to <strong>the</strong> often slender shape of <strong>the</strong> construction<br />
component, focused light with narrow<br />
beams is more suited than wide beam light distributions<br />
to emphasise <strong>the</strong> support<strong>in</strong>g framework<br />
us<strong>in</strong>g graz<strong>in</strong>g light. Precise light<strong>in</strong>g technology<br />
helps reduce spill light to a m<strong>in</strong>imum. A<br />
meticulous arrangement and exact alignment<br />
of <strong>the</strong> lum<strong>in</strong>aires contributes to decreas<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>the</strong> light emissions <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> sky <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terest<br />
of a Dark Sky concept. Accentuat<strong>in</strong>g cable<br />
constructions is a particular challenge due to<br />
<strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>imal material diameter. Often, it proves<br />
more effective <strong>in</strong> such cases to illum<strong>in</strong>ate <strong>the</strong><br />
primary support<strong>in</strong>g framework, as more light<br />
reflects off bigger structural members. Bridges<br />
above water make for fasc<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g views when<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir illum<strong>in</strong>ated structure is reflected <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
water. The classic traffic and pathway light<strong>in</strong>g<br />
on <strong>the</strong> bridge ensures sufficient horizontal illum<strong>in</strong>ances<br />
with pleasant visual comfort for drivers,<br />
cyclists and pedestrians. Exposed lum<strong>in</strong>aire<br />
positions on bridges may be problematic <strong>in</strong><br />
terms of ma<strong>in</strong>tenance. In addition to select<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>the</strong> best possible mount<strong>in</strong>g location, long-life<br />
and completely ma<strong>in</strong>tenance-free lamps such<br />
as LEDs help keep <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>tenance costs to a<br />
m<strong>in</strong>imum.<br />

<strong>the</strong> water flow<strong>in</strong>g over<br />
<strong>the</strong> dams, <strong>the</strong> designers<br />
