New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) Cancer
Services Program Recognizes Kinney Drugs for Colorectal
Cancer Outreach and Screenings
The New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) Cancer Services Program
presented a 2008 Innovative Project / Event Award to Kinney Drugs for its efforts during
Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month in March. The award recognized colorectal cancer
outreach, screening events and media coverage that Kinney Drugs provided in partnership
with the Cancer Services Program.
In March, Kinney invited the Cancer Services Program Partnerships into 61 of our
stores to set up clinics for colorectal cancer outreach and recruitment opportunities. We
provided the facility, as well as advertising for outreach events throughout the month that
allowed the Cancer Services Program Partnerships to distribute colorectal cancer screening
tests to men and women over the age of 50 who have no insurance or insurance that does
not cover colorectal screenings. Over the past two years in partnering with this program,
13 test results have come back positive. A referral program is in place for such results.
According to the Cancer Services Program, Kinney Drugs was selected for an Innovative
Project / Event Award for being a strong example of what community collaboration can
and should be.
Colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death in the United States in men
and women, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS). Screening can reduce death rates from colorectal cancer
both by preventing the disease and by detecting it at earlier, more treatable stages. The relative five-year survival is 90
percent for colorectal cancer patients diagnosed at an early, localized stage, but only 39 percent of cases are diagnosed
at this stage. It is one of the few cancers that can be prevented through screening because precancerous polyps, from
which colon cancers often develop, can be identified and removed. The ACS recommends women and men of average
risk begin screenings at age 50. Of the 49,960 people expected to die of colorectal cancers in 2008, it is estimated
that appropriate testing could save more than half.
CORNER The best way to start out 2009 is by making sure you know how much we appreciate your
hard work and the dedication to customer service that helped us have a very successful
2008! You have been and will continue to be an important part of Kinney’s success,
both last year and this year as well. The Board of Directors has approved our 2009 Fiscal
Budget and Business Plans, and together, we have a long list of “things to do” this year!
PRESIDENT’S
2
It’s Your Kinney…
Perhaps the biggest item on that list that we must all focus on is finding more ways to
generate additional sales!
With the economy being what it is, at the national, state and local level, we all need to concentrate
our efforts into adding more sales, and at the same time make sure our spending patterns are in
alignment with our sales.
For some of you, your positions in the company have an obvious and direct link to sales. As
pharmacists and pharmacy techs, you know you can increase sales every time you go the extra mile
to fill one additional script. As a cashier, you know that you can increase sales when you provide
outstanding customer service that keeps those customers coming back.
And yet for others of you, you may be asking, “My job isn’t directly linked to sales…. so how
can I help?”
Let me answer that question by asking another question. Have you ever bought an item in a
grocery, convenience or department store that you could have purchased at Kinney’s?
Ever been in a grocery store and thrown paper towels, spaghetti sauce, coffee etc… into your
cart? Ever grab a soda and a bag of chips at the gas station? Ever pick up that extra pair of
needle nose pliers at the local hardware store? My guess is we have all done that.
In 2008, our employee owners spent $4.6 million dollars in sales at Kinney’s. In doing so, they
also saved themselves $500,000 through their employee discount!
Let’s look at this year. We currently have 2700+ employees. If every employee took
$10/week that they would have spent someplace else… like a grocery store, hardware
store, pet store, convenience store etc., and bought those same items in their Kinney
store… it would generate an additional $1.4 million in sales! That’s a lot of
money!
Now we’re not asking you to buy something you wouldn’t normally buy, or to
spend money that you can’t afford. What we are asking is that you shop Kinney first!
Make Kinney’s the first stop on your grocery list!
After all… it is your Kinney!
WHAT’S HAPPENING in Our Communities
Wellness Wednesdays
Kinney Drugs and St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center have partnered to offer
“Wellness Wednesdays,” a series of free health education and screenings, at store
#85 located at 104 Lafayette Road, Syracuse, N.Y.
The program began on Wednesday, Dec. 3rd and will offer free weekly screenings
by a registered nurse or respiratory therapist from the St. Joseph’s Hospital
Wellness Program. The screenings will focus on heart health, lung health and
diabetes awareness. The purpose of the screenings is to continue to build on
Kinney’s healthcare image and to promote preventive health in the community
by educating people and providing information that could help prevent chronic
health problems. Thank you to the team at store 85 for their efforts in putting this
program together.
Kinney Drugs Partners with
Crouse Hospital’s Lights of
Love Campaign, Syracuse N.Y.
Proceeds from Lights of Love this year will be used to
further cancer and stroke patient services at Crouse Hospital.
Donations will help build an infusion lounge for the delivery
of chemotherapy to outpatients. This treatment area will be
furnished with lounge chairs, televisions and other comforts
for patients and families. Contributions will also allow Crouse
Hospital to purchase more equipment specifically for the care
of stroke patients in the Emergency Department.
Flu & Pneumonia Clinics -
Kinney cares about keeping you healthy through the flu season!
First Edition 2009
Once again Kinney hosted a chain wide effort
in conjunction with Maxim Health Systems to
offer customers the convenience of receiving
a flu and/or pneumonia vaccination. This year
126 clinics were offered which resulted in a
total of 11,112 vaccinations. Several stores
hosted two clinics to accommodate their
customers at different times of the day. Thank
you to all stores for taking part in this program!
Let’s remember to keep ourselves
healthy through flu season. Dave
Caladria from store 79 was recently
asked to comment on a community
service article for cold/flu season
with one of our local papers. Great
job Dave! Below are his comments:
1. Flu is very contagious; hand washing and
sanitizing areas such as doorknobs, toilet
handles, faucets, etc will reduce the chances of
infecting others.
2. Always check expiration dates and replace
products as needed. (Do this several times a
year - not just at cold and flu season).
3. Check w/ Dr. or Pharmacist if you take any
prescription drugs or have other medical conditions.
4. Always read labels carefully and only take as directed.
5. All medication should be kept out of reach of children and in
child proof containers.
6. Specialized products available for patients with certain disease
states (Coricidin HBP line for hypertensive patients or sugar free
formulations for diabetic patients).
7. Always use children’s medication for appropriate ages – never
give adult formulations to children and try to “adjust” the dose.
8. Drink plenty of fluids and rest as much as possible.
9. Most OTC products have store brand generic equivalents that are
just as effective as the brand names, but much cheaper.
What should be
in your medicine
cabinet during
cold/flu season?
1. Analgesics for body
aches and fever: Tylenol
(Acetaminophen) or
Motrin/Advil (Ibuprofen)
2. Cough suppressant for dry
cough (Delsym)
3. Nasal Decongestant for head
congestion (Sudafed)
4. Expectorant to loosen
mucous and chest congestion
(Robitussin, Mucinex)
5. Antihistamines for sneezing/
runny nose (Benadryl,
Claritin, Zyrtec)
6. Combination products
available for multiple
symptoms
7. Cough drops
8. Sore throat spray/lozenges
(Cepacol, Chloroseptic)
9. Disinfectant sprays or wipes
(Lysol, Clorox)
10. Hand sanitizer

Diabetes Screenings
This past summer Kinney conducted 3 diabetes pilot programs that
would serve as the model for future Kinney Diabetes programs. The
programs proved successful and screenings were launched in each of
our markets. The events were held in conjunction with medical centers
and Cornell Cooperative Extension. The programs were implemented
to educate residents of the community on the risk factors of diabetes,
give them the opportunity to have their numbers checked for free and
to consult with a Certified Diabetes Educator.
Two test options were available; an A1C test which measures your
average blood sugar levels for the past 2 to 3 months, this test
is encouraged for people who have already been diagnosed with
diabetes. The second test is a simple blood glucose test which
measures your blood sugar level at any point in time.
Once results are given, a Certified Diabetes Educator was on hand
to discuss the results and share important information on diabetes
prevention and management.
Diabetes is one of the 3 leading causes of death and disability in
America. Kinney is working together with local hospitals to provide
FREE disease education and screenings to encourage people to care
about their health and the health of their families.
Breast Cancer Awareness and Education Days
First Edition 2009
In 2007 Kinney hosted
11 breast cancer
awareness and education
days; in 2008 the
program grew to 39
stores! Hundreds of
local residents came to
our stores throughout
VT and NY to learn
more about breast
cancer awareness in
conjunction with 25
Medical Centers
and 15 county/state
health departments.
The Medical
Centers offered
County and State Health Departments presented information on the
various cancer service programs that are free to those who qualify.
Several surveys were sent back from our partners with positive comments
about the professionalism of store personnel and with Kinney’s
support, their community outreach has grown. North Country Mobile
Mammography set up their mobile unit at stores in St. Lawrence County.
One of our own store managers’s talked about how convenient it was to
go through the mobile unit as opposed to going to her doctor’s office.
Representatives from Susan G. Komen for the Cure were also present
at some events. Once again, thank you for your support of these
worthwhile community events.

Executive Office Does Their Part
The Gouverneur Executive Office staff chose to give their
four and one family of six. Shown here are Joanna deLorraine,
and official gift wrapper; and not shown Nancy Garrand,
the Exec. Office staff has provided for families. In the past they
have donated to other Christmas families, Adopt a Platoon,
and other projects. Fun is had by all as they keep track of gifts
and make sure every child has an equal number and the parents
have family gifts, food items and store certificates.
The following is Manager, April Sumner’s note to
Regional Retail Manager Dale Myatt. We wanted to
share with you what this store did. We know that other
stores and locations did some of this sort of Christmas
giving also and we know that it is appreciated to the
needy in all our areas.
Dale, I just wanted to let you know, as a compliment to the staff
here at Store #76 in Elizabethtown, New York. In organizing our
annual Christmas party my employees decided to forego the usual name
drawing and on a voluntary basis give to the Toys For Kids Campaign.
In addition, they have taken a portion of our Christmas Store Fund to
sponsor a local family of four to dinner and gifts for the family’s children.
I had absolutely no influence in the planning of this – it was my
employees and I am so proud of them! April
Just a Little Halloween Fun
Although always busy keeping this customers satisfied
and thrilled to come back to their respective stores –
these Kinney Drugs employees have a little fun with
Halloween. Store workers at #49 in Little Falls, New
York; ranged from baseball players to Dorothy from
the Wizard of Oz – including the “baby pumpkin”.
And then there are the official Kinney Cheerleaders
from Store #24 in Pulaski. Looks like all ladies – don’t
you guys know that you can be cheerleaders to – we
expected to see Pharmacist Mark Palmer in the official
cheer get-up.
