Is It an Option<br />

for United Methodists?<br />

P . r<strong>of</strong>essor Lawrence Stookey <strong>of</strong> Wesley <strong>The</strong>ological Seminary,<br />

writing in Doxology, the journal <strong>of</strong> the Order <strong>of</strong> St. Luke, has<br />

stated that<br />

United Methodists face a crucial challenge <strong>of</strong> understanding and<br />

interpretation with respect to the new baptismal rites <strong>of</strong> our denomination.<br />

This was evident in the fact that the most substantive<br />

(indeed, almost the only) changes made at the 1988 General<br />

Conference to the report <strong>of</strong>the Hymnal Revision Committee,<br />

were in this area. 1<br />

From several "grassroots" sources, actually from several<br />

generations <strong>of</strong> our seminary alumni/ae, I have heard criticism <strong>of</strong> our<br />

new baptismal liturgies. <strong>The</strong> general tenor <strong>of</strong> complaint is that the<br />

new liturgies tend to take us to a more Roman Catholic or Lutheran<br />

understanding <strong>of</strong> baptism than we had hitherto observed.<br />

As I turned to the baptismal liturgies in the new hymnal, I found<br />

words leaning in the direction <strong>of</strong> baptismal regeneration that might<br />

give <strong>of</strong>fense:<br />
