“Aboriginal Mindstorms Workshop”
Engineering Career Conference for Aboriginal Students
UBC Okanagan
Students from Glenrosa Middle, Secondary Middle, OKM
and Rutland Senior Secondary attended an ―Aboriginal
Mindstorms Workshop‖ at an Engineering Conference held
at UBC Okanagan on Thursday, June 17th.
This conference was presented by Dr. Kenneth Chau,
UBCO Professor of Engineering, and engineering students
Chris Collier and Ska-Hiish Manuel. Grade 8-10 Aboriginal
students were provided with the opportunity to find out
what it's like to be an Engineer and what their job duties
are. Students also worked on hand-on activities in the
computer lab.
The students toured research labs and met engineering
students and faculty. They learned what engineering and
science is about, with their main activity being the construction and programming of their own individual
Lego Mindstorms Robot, using a special software program and lego pieces!
Students also explored other robotic development platforms: VEX, Bioloid, Parallax and Arduino Rover. �
