Rutland Middle School
“A Business of Our Own”
The students of Rutland Middle School
participated in the Junior Achievement
of British Columbia (JABC) Business
Basics grade 7 program ―A Business Of
Our Own‖ in May of 2010.
Local volunteers came to RMS and
discussed with students how to build a
business. Students learned to develop
and implement a business plan, market
their business, plan their finances and
lastly, how to sell their products. All
products sold by businesses had to be
approved for safety and health before
the group could go ahead.
Each team or business had extra class
time to organize for their big sales day
which occurred the following week.
On sales day each business set up their
station and sold their products over
lunch time.
After sales were complete, students
made sure all loans were paid in full.
The remainder of the profits were
tallied and the business with the most
profit won. All profits were then
donated to a local charity selected by
the winning business.
The students had a great time on sales
day and were able to identify which
strategies worked and which needed
improvement. �

“Cool Trades 9”
In ―Cool Trades 9‖ students are exposed
to the trades. Students are currently
working on their dog house and electrical
wall circuits.
