12 New Project Placement “Students Helping Seniors in Our Community” OKM Students Volunteer at Mission Villas Computer Tutor Recreation Assistants Activities include: Pub Olympics Bingo Night Jenny and George “The managing partner and all the staff here are looking forward to opportunities for positive interactions between seniors and students.” - Carrie Skinner Jennifer Kenny, our student Computer Tutor helps seniors learn how to use a computer. This volunteer program is geared toward helping seniors who have minimal or no experience with computers. Students help seniors learn how to do things such as downloading attachments from their email, sending photos to friends and family, creating a social networking account, writing letters using Word or searching for information using Google. � Students Andrew Harris-Goodall and Tannis Williamson assist the Mission Villas staff with planned recreational activities. WII Bowling Tournaments or other WII gaming events Bocci Ball at the Beach Special events such as the Community BBQ or the Kentucky Derby party Playing the piano for the seniors’ enjoyment Students will also provide some of the senior residents with companionship which may include, for example, playing ping pong with them or simply providing seniors with company and conversation on a walk with their dog. � The three OKM students working at Mission Villas are: Recreation Assistant - Tannis Williamson Recreation Assistant - Andrew Harris-Goodall Computer Tutor - Jennifer Kenny OKM students Andrew Harris-Goodall and Tannis Williamson play scrabble with Marjorie, Joy and Betty. The lady seated is Irene Welch, behind her is Jean Reynolds, George MacKenzie, and OKM Computer Tutor Jennifer Kenny. “This new Project Placement is very exciting for our residents and the two parts: “Recreation Assistants” and “Computer Tutor” fit very well into Mission Villas activity programs. The managing partner and all the staff here are looking forward to the opportunities for positive interactions between seniors and students. We feel very lucky to have OKM students volunteering their time and energies. The team here is committed to making this Project Placement succeed. The ideas for computer tutoring are wonderful and right up the residents’ alley. We do have a variety of skills and abilities here and many more residents interested in computer mentorship. I spoke to several of the residents who have benefitted from the student volunteers visiting and they were all enthusiastic. We are so happy and delighted to have Tannis, Jennifer and Andrew here! They all seem so keen and we have volunteer hours scheduled for June and throughout the summer. Thanks for sending great students! ”Art Adventures 2010” Kelowna Art Gallery Students will assist instructors with activities provided each day at ―Art Adventures 2010‖. The Art Adventures camps will be attended by children aged 6-12. The one week camps offered this summer are: Painting FUNdamentals Wondrous Woodlands Mini Masters Art and Grind Imagination Unleashed Everyday Explorers Tribal Voices Cavemen and Pharaohs Planes, Trains, and Art-imobiles Bug Buddies Information on the Art Adventures 2010 program can be found on the Kelowna Art Gallery’s website at kelownaartgallery.com Students will attend an information/training session at the Kelowna Art Gallery on Tuesday, June 29th. � There are still some openings for volunteers! ”Science Opportunities for Kids” UBCO Summer Camp Volunteer Students will assist (SOKS) counsellors, conducting science experiments and activities with children aged 6-12 in the following UBCO summer science camps: French Camp: Pirates Pop, Fizz, Kaboom The Human Experience Pirates of the Okanagan Engineering: Skateboarding & Robots There are half-day Junior and full-day Senior camps. The Junior Camp will count for 20 volunteer hours per week, and the Senior Camp will count for 35 hours. The first camp starts July 5, with the final camp running the week of August 23. Each week has a different theme. Students may apply for any week they choose. There are still some openings in this Project Placement. Interested students can contact Matthew Gillespie at UBC Okanagan: soks.camp@gmail.com � Summer Project Placements Fastpitch Softball League Development Assistants Student volunteers will develop a Fastpitch Softball League for high school students. The goal is to have the Softball League in place for September 5, 2010. There are volunteer opportunities in Marketing, Management/Leadership, Advertising, Artwork, Administration, Planning, Instructing & Coaching. There will also be an opportunity for students to receive their Level 1 NCAA Coaching certificate. This Project Placement is for any young sportsminded volunteer interested in getting involved in planning and organizing a new Fastpitch Softball League for high school students. Planning and organizing for the new fall league will take place during July and August. Volunteer Duties Will Include: Management/Sport Leadership Opportunities Administrative Work Advertising Marketing Artwork Training/Coaching Activities There will be an Orientation Session on Monday, June 28 th at Twist–The Next Level from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. � Deadline for students to apply is Friday, June 25th. ”Camp OC” Summer Volunteers 13 FULL Thirty-six SD#23 students have signed up to volunteer at ―Camp OC‖, a day summer camp for kids and teens in grades 2 to 9 facilitated through Continuing Studies at Okanagan College. On June 15th from 3:30 to 8:00 pm, students attended an Orientation Session and Workshop entitled ―Understanding Behavior Challenges‖, developed to educate volunteers on the types of obstacles that many kids and teens face such as sensory processing, attention difficulties and challenges in communication. Students will assist camp instructors with planned activities and the supervision of campers during a week of their choice between July 5th and August 27th for 35 volunteer hours. �
