ISLANDER TAKES
CHRISTMAS TO
VIRGIN ISLANDS
BY CRAIG MCARTHUR
A Salt Spring Island woman is
taking Christmas to the British
Virgin Islands this month.
She is Mrs. Florence Hepburn
a well known school teacher of the
island living on the Hepburn
farm, a familiar landmark at
Fulford Harbour.
On Monday she left for Tortola,
one -of the British Virgin
Islands, where she will stay with
General William Draper, to holiday
and help with native work and
children on the island.
ROTARY PENNANT
This year she will be taking
with her the Christmas goodwishes
of the Salt Spring Rotary
Club to another Rotary Club at
Tortola. Only recently local Rotarians
presented Mrs. Hepburn
with a Rotary pennant to hand
over to the Rotary Club on this
British Virgin Island.
What is more, the Salt Spring
Rotarians presented her with
substantial contribution with
which to purchase candies and
books for the native children on
Tortola.
Providing her own good measure
of initiative, Mrs. Hepburn
is putting together a Santa Claus
costume, and it will be the first
real one ever to be seen on the
island. It will be worn at Christmas
by General Draper, who
MRS. FLORENCE HEPBURN of Tortola, in the British Virgin
Fulford Harbour holds a Rotary Islands. It will be among other
pennant, donated by Salt Spring gifts she plans to give to native
Island Rotarians, which she will children this Christmas on the
present to the Rotary Club on island.
along with Mrs. Hepburn, will
sail to other British Virgin Islands
to bring "A Merry Christmas" to
the native children.
ORIGINAL BELLS
Mrs. Hepburn has also added
another deft touch to her Christmas
paraphernalia. She took with
her the original bells that were
used by Cst. Tweedhope in 1932
when he, played Santa Claus at
the old Divide School, which so
many islanders will recall with
fond memories. She will ring
them to usher in Christmas in the
British Virgin Islands.
Other gifts include key chains,
made of rhodonite mined on Salt
Spring Island's Mt. Tuam.
HELP ISLANDERS
This is Mrs. Hepburn's second
visit to Tortola. While there,
she will instruct native people in
shell craft which will be used as
saleable items to bolster the
tourist business of the island. The
islanders rely on tourism because
no viable industry has established
there.
"The natives are the happiest,
most loveable people in the
world, she said.
She has returned the loving
welcome the native people have
given to her by trying to help
them live and work for a better
way of life.
Steve Nelson named Chamber president
Steve Nelson was elected president
of the Salt Spring Island
Chamber of Commerce last week.
He was named by acclamation
and he has already taken the chair
occupied for two years by Gerry
Bourdin.
New president is the proprietor
of Nelson Marine and has
been active in many community
projects during the past 10 years.
Vice-president is Gary Mc-
Pherson, of Mouat's Trading.
Nelson and McPherson worked
together this year on the May Day
celebrations in Ganges.
Jerry Stennes, manager of the
Bank of Montreal, is the treasurer.
Four directors were named on
Tuesday evening. They are Bob
Blundell, Cpl. Ray Stelter,
RCMP, Hugh Porter and Keith
Veltman.
The small meeting in the
Legion Hall at Ganges, heard
reports from various committees
before the election of officers.
Frank Richards presided over the
election.
WEEKLY VISITATIONS
Island protest assures
ICBC adjuster to stay
Adjusters of the Insurance
Corporation of B.C. will continue
to make weekly visitations to Salt
Spring Island.
That's the official word from
the Corporation following a steady
barrage of protests from
islanders objecting strongly to the
reported withdrawal of insurance
adjusters.
Responding to a flood of
telephone calls and a front-page
news-rstory in the Dec. 8 edition of
Driftwood, Jack Bell, manager of
the Victoria claims office, said
ICBC had no intention of withdrawing
the weekly service of
adjusters from the island. "We
simply couldn't provide the weekly
service one week because of the
volume of work going through the
Victoria claims office and the
number of staff off sick," he said.
The claims office manager
stated that "we were coming on a
need basis....if there were major
claims to consider, we were ready
to come the next day...we were
looking at minor claims in bulk."
Continued on Page 7
Holiday break
The next edition of Driftwood
will be published on Jan. 5,
enabling the staff who bring you
your community newspaper to
take a holiday break.
Display advertising deadline
will be Dec. 31. Deadline for
classified advertisements will be
noon, Jan. 4.
CARE TREE FUND $7,800
• *
Every expectation of new record
By Monday night, this week it
was evident that the Pearson
CARE Tree Fund on Pender
Island had knocked out last year's
figures. Monday saw the fund
reach $7,800. Total last year was
$8,455.
Sponsors, Pender Island Lions
Club and the originatoi- of the
illuminated Christmas Tree,
George Pearson are gratified with
this year's response. They are
particularly happy as thev have
no recent yardstick on which to,
base their expectations. Last
year's campaign was conducted
in the face of a mail strike and
there is no record of the pattern of
contributions.
The campaign invites islanders
and others to contribute to the
CARE Tree at Pender instead of
sending Christmas cards. Each
donation is the signal for lighting
a lamp on the tree.
It was lighted up on December
15 and every day brings new
lights to the branches.
George Pearson, retired Standard
Oil Company staffer, now in
his 90's, started the project a
decade ago and he has watched it
grow beyond his -capacity to
administer. Last year the campaign
was conducted for the first
time by the Pender Island Lions
Club.
This year's campaign director
is Stewart Corbett.
Contributions may yet be
made to the George Pearson
CARE Christmas Tree, Pender
Island Lions Club, Port Washington,
B.C. VON 2TO.
The CARE Tree has caught
the fancy of hundreds of donors,
in the islands and far beyond. All
donations are acceptable to the
island service club and every
contribution will bring an unknown
suffering human being one
stage closer to comfort, plead the
sponsors.
CHRISTMAS AND THE NATIVITY THROUGH YOUNG EYES
MELANIE VERREAULT
Children love Christmas. They
know they get presents and give
'presents and people are happier
and nicer than the rest of the
year. But why?
Driftwood literally grabbed
children at random in the area of
Ganges and asked them why we
celebrate Christmas and what it
means to them.
Here is what they said:
MELANIE VERREAULT:
iTs Jesus bimiuay ana
MEGAN WILLIAMSON
CJaus. We don't have a chimney
and so Santa will have to come in
at the front door. I would like two
dolls. One that cries and the other
doll that kisses.
MEGAN WILLIAMSON
It is Christ's birthday and
everyone celebrates it by giving
each other presents. Jesus has a
messenger named Santa Claus
who gives all the kids presents. I
SONIA HICKMAN
TIMOTHY WILLIAMSON
People give presents to people
to show they care about people. It
is Jesus's birthday. I have a
go-cart on my Christmas list but
would settle for balsa wood to
make models.
SONIA HICKMAN
People love other people and
want to give them presents. I
would like a ballet dress and
ballet slippers.
-TONY DESBOT7ES
means lots of toys and Santa jewellery! He was busy cooking slabs of
SANDRA DESBOTTES
gingerbread to make a gingerbread
house and while he kept an
eye on the timer said: It is a time
of good cheer amongst people and
the remembrance of Jesus's
birth. I like it because I have a
good time with my family and
friends. I would like a radio and
tape recorder combined. If not a
game called 'Life'.
SANDRA DESBOTTES
To remember when Jesus was
any, pet animal like a lamb or a
chimpanzee! A trampoline would
also be nice.
KATHY STENNES
It's a time to remember
Jesus's birth. On Christmas Day I
like to open my presents and eat
lots of-candies and to stay up late.
For a present I would like the
record called 'Hit Machine' which
has lots of rock groups on it. Or
else a horse and a stable U^t^

ROUNDABOUT
Bv SMITHY
Family Christinas is the best
"CHRISTMAS - Bah - Humbue!"
so said Scrooge and
reiterated by Al Howell at Central
Hall recently. As you all know it
was the story of a miser who was
irascible and mean but repented
in the end and was the life and
soul of the" party.
_ In this day and age of inflation
and with children born and bred
in the television era, I am
beginning to think Scrooge was
wrong when he said, "Christmas
- Bah", but not wrong when he
added, "Humbug". Maybe it's
my age; maybe I've gone sour
and lost the Christmas spirit.
Maybe it's because of now living
on this lovely quiet island where
one is more aware of being
t.aroling Merry
Christmas and
thanks to our many
kind patrons.
ra
May every happiness be yours
at this loveliest of seasons.
natural and fully appreciating the
sincerity and simplicity of being
closer to the way of life that really
matters. The quiet evenings;
friendly gatherings; the country-
' side walks and rows across a lake;
growing your own vegetables;
catching your own fish. All at a
cost of relatively nothing.
Christmas, of course, has
become too commercialized and it
has encouraged people to go all
out to 'keep up with the Joneses'.
To me Christmas is for children
and the celebration of the
birth of Christ. As a child I had a
fair share of presents but they
were mainly constructive and
educational. Nowadays, children
expect and demand more and to
blazes with a Meccano set when
dear old Dad can be persuaded to
fork out around $100 for an
electronic eye-destroying game of
hockey cum tennis. And how long
will the novelty last? Or you buy
plastic toys which either break or
are trampled underfoot by Boxing
Day. What about adults? You exchange
gifts, and, let's face it, try
to be on a par or emulate the
person receiving the gift. Or the
other angle. You spend loving
weeks preparing macrame which
includes a pot of three hyacinth
bulbs to the point of flowering
and you give it to someone who
immediately dashes out to buy
you the first thing he sets eyes on
and also thinks your gift is for the
birds. An exaggerated example,
perhaps, but my point is the loss
and meaning of the true Christmas
spirit that should prevail.
What about Christmas cards?
You think you have covered all
your friends and relatives when
out of the blue comes a host of
cards from people not on your list.
You immediately scramble to
amend matters with New Year
cards. And isn't it sad when you
realize that the only way you ever
communicate is with a printed
name of yourself or just your
signature? Two or three minutes
with a personal note enclosed
would make all the difference in
the world.
Last year, just before Christmas,
I lost my job as area
manager for a carpet firm for
insufficient gross sales. My Better
Half was also unemployed at
the time and our funds were down
to zero. Yet we had one of the
finest Christmases I can remember.
We had our parents over and
we all went to church. The wintry
sun filtered through the beautiful
stained glass windows and we felt
the best Christmas present we
had was the fact that our parents
were still with us and we were all
in good health. We were enjoying
Christmas as it should be spent -
family - friendly faces -- and
recognition of the true value and
appreciation of the birth of our
Saviour.
Happy Christmas to you all!
New evening
service to
be started
On Sunday, Jan. 2, the United
Church will inaugurate a new
evening service.
"An Hour of Sharing and
Caring" will have the least amount
of structure possible, and it
is hoped that even people who
have veered away from more
formal types of worship service
will find something which meets
their needs.
Musical instruments will be
welcomed; and if you like to sit on
the floor bring a cushion.
The meeting will start at 6.30
pm and families are invited to
bring their children if they feel
they will enjoy an hour of togetherness,
with prayers worship
and an exchange of problems,
joys, news and views - anything
which will express the love of God
and in each other.
Beefing about the post office?
How about this? Driftwood sent
by air mail from Ganges for
several weeks in a row during
November arrived in a small
Welsh town three days liter.
Wednesday the paper was delivered
to Ivor Cawker in Ganges
Post Office. Saturday it was
pushed through the letter drop in
k
my brother-in-law's front door.
I'll bet you Robert Adair in
Montreal is gratified to read that!
We can't give this kind of service
in Montreal! No matter what
language you talk!
* * *
Keep hearing about the horseman
in the pub. It was while I was
away, but they tell me the horse
was banned from the building for
30 days after he caused an
upheaval. That's what you get for
horsing around!
* * *
Blues and greens are a lot
alike. I can't always tell the
difference. But there's Women's
Lib: she can tell them apart to the
nth degree. Now, I don't blow my
top because she's so good at
colours. Me? I'm just good at
spotting cobwebs. I can see a
cobweb hanging from the ceiling
in the woodshed at midnight with
to be frank
by rictiards
all the lights out. I just have that
skill. And Women's Lib blows her
top because I'm so good!
* * *
The United Bank Workers
wrote to the office. And like you'd
figure, they were pretty accurate.
I mean, playing with money you
have to be! And it came to the
office with this address: "The
Dilfont Weekly, McPhillips Ave."
You see, the Post Office had it
figured!
* * *
And let's have less of this
Dcadwood business, while we're
at it!
* * *
Heard a new joke this week....
at least, new to me—man sees a
rabbit in the store, but it's a big
one. Couldn't eat a whole rabbit,
he tells the butcher, could he
have just half? Sorry, sir, replied
the man, we don't split hares!
* * *
Despite television advertising
I cannot accept that the Almighty
placed cats on this earth for the
sole purpose of making cat food
companies wealthy, or sentimental
owners sickly. In fact, us mice
ain't quite sure what His idea
was.
Gwen Forbes
passes away
(Contributed)
Mrs. Gwendoline Forbes of
Ganges passed away in her 86th
year at Lady Minto Gulf Islands
Hospital, on Monday, Dec. 20.
Born in London, England on
November 15, 1891, the second
daughter of Mary and Thomas
Edwards, formerly of Treorchy,
South Wales, she first came to
Canada at the age of 14 and
settled in Nelson, B.C. with her
sister Miriam Thomson.
At the age of 20 she married
Ross Forbes of North Sydney,
Nova Scotia, and for the next 10
years travelled extensively in
Canada with him. Their only
child, Mary (Williamson) was
born in Indian Head, Saskatchewan.
In 1929 the family went to
England and Mrs. Forbes lived in
London until 1960, when she
returned to Canada with her
daughter. They lived in Victoria
for 10 years and in 1971, after a
serious illness, she came to Salt
Spring Island, where she lived at
the Pioneer Village until a few
months before her death.
A member of Bloomsbury
Central Baptist Church in London,
Gwen Forbes was a regular
congregant at Emmanuel Baptist
Church in Victoria and Ganges
United Church, Salt Spring. She
was a member of the O.A.P.O.
and Ladies Auxiliary to the Canadian
Legion. She fulfilled Jesus'
commandments all her life. She
loved and served her God and her
neighbours unstintingly.
Retiring president recalls two
unfinished concerns this year
Gerry Bourdin made his last
farewells as president of Salt
Spring Island Chamber of Commerce
last week.
Before relinquishing his chair,
he reported that two outstanding
matters of concern to the Chamber
have been the subjects of
protest to separate legislations.
Letter to Chairman Jim Campbell,
of the Capital Regional
District recently, called for retention
of building controls and
inspection on the island.
There has not yet been any
reply, he noted.
Second subject of the Chamber's
protest was the recent
announcement that the Insurance
Corporation of British Columbia
has withdrawn the island attendance
of insurance adjusters.
Chamber wrote to the corporation
and has not yet received a
reply, said Bourdin.
The retiring president expressed
thanks to the Salt Spring
Island Rotary Club and the Lions
Club of Salt Spring Island for
Itheir assistance in financing the
visit of the Christmas Ship last
week.
EXPRESSES THANKS
In conclusion he thanked the
directors for their support during
Property exchange
hinted
Exchange of property is to be
considered by the Salt Spring
Island Chamber of Commerce
before a formal request is made. "•
At last week's annual meeting
of the Chamber, Retiring President
Gerry Bourdin observed that
he had been approached by the
owner of land in the vicinity of
Maxwell Lake who was contemplating
asking the government to
trade his property for land of
equal timber value in a less
significant location.
The property is hear the
watershed on Mount Maxwell and
logging would be a detriment to
the park, it is feared. He did not
identify property or owner.
EDITORIALS
Suddenly it's Christmas
Suddenly it's Christmas.
Suddenly we like each other. It happens just like that.
It's funny what an effect it has on so many of us. Whether
we see Christmas as the annual feast of Santa Claus, or a
religious occasion, or an opportunity to get a skinful of meat
and drink, we start out a little more benevolently disposed to
others. We can communicate with the fellow across the street
who has sgch appalling habits and we can even look east at
Quebec without spluttering.
On Saturday we may be able to forget the wrongs that have
been done to us. We may even be able to remember the
wrongs we have done to others. On account of it's Christmas,
we are able to remember.
We may be able to look mildly on the pinko world and
forget that nobody who thinks that different could even be
human.
Some of us might even reach the point where we can
communicate with a mother-in-law. The season does that to
us. It's Christmas and the fellow who owes us a lot of money
becomes a likeable fellow. The man we owe money to is less
likeable, but it's Christmas anyway!
Even in the realm of politics the season has a softeninn
effect. We couldn't vote for the unmentionable, but he isn't all
that bad. At least, for one day only, he isn't that bad!
Only with a few of us does Christmas get into important
matters, of course. If the other fellow looks different, then not
even at Christmas can we look kindly on him. But who would
expect it?
And it all goes to show that Christmas is a mark on the
calendar for many of us. We eat well, drink well, live well and
feel the effects.
The spirit of Christmas manages to survive the staff party
and the club party and a few other parties, but it often remains
more akin to the benevolent effects of alcoholic excess than to
an inner conviction.
If we all were imbued with this spirit of Christmas for 12
months in a year the whole course of history could change. The
odds are all in favour of the course continuing in the same rut.
F
The greatest
gift of all
(or The Fourth Wise Man)
BY GRACE A. WRIGHT
Jesus who in a manger lay
So long ago on Christmas Day,
Was sent to earth a Babe so small -
The greatest Gift to save us all.
Then God ordained a Guiding Star
To bring the wise men from afar.
Four travelled o'er the desert wild,
To bring their gifts to that small Child.
But Artaban stopped on his way
Because a man in fever lay.
So three Wise Men, we have been told,
Brought frankincense, and myrrh, and gold.
God warned the Holy Family
From wicked Herod they must flee.
In time to foil vile Herod's plan.
Came with his gift, the fourth Wise Man.
God knew for whom this gift was meant,
And how in love it had been spent:
For man to help his fellowman.
Is all a part of His great plan.
In memory of that Baby's birth,
We mark each Christmas here on earth,'
With cards and gifts to those we love •
While singing praise to Him above.
And those who do not bear His name
Enjoy the season just the same;
God sent His Son to earth to be
The greatest Gift for you and me.
Following dinner, Bryan
Smith, Ken Gaylor, Pat Desbottes
and Reg Taylor also entertained
the pensioners. Community singing
closed off the evening program.
Guests who needed transportation
ISLAND PROTEST
Continued from Page 1
He readily admitted, however,
that the mounting protest had
"the desired results, because it
assured the continuance of the
weekly adjuster service to the
island."
Bell conceded that "we have
to provide service to the public....
that is the idea of Auto Plan."
He explained that Adjuster
Ray Rock came to Ganges last
Wednesday, though he added
that there have been few claims to
consider on recent visits of the
adjuster to the island
In a statement issued by the
Victoria claims office, Adjuster
Ray Rock, CIB, will be at Ganges
Tuesday or Thursday of each
week. He will, as previously,
work out of an office in the Salt
Spring Insurance building across
from the Bank of Montreal in
Ganges. Anyone having need of
the adjuster should phone
537-5527 for an appointment, and
is asked not to contact the claims
centre in Victoria.
CHAMBER CONCERNED
Commenting on the protest
made to ICBC General Manager
Norman Bortnick, Salt Spring
Chamber of Commerce President
Gerry Bourdin said, "If these
government agencies and Crown
Corporations were to discuss their
plans and problems with the
communities affected before making
a move, a lot of confusion and
grief might be avoided."
He welcomed the announcement
that the claims adjuster
service is continuing on a weekly
basis.
The Chamber president added,
"It's our right to demand that
the service be maintained weekly.
Also, the weekly adjuster service
has been working satisfactorily
for islanders and for the collision
repair services on the island,
which would have lost a lot of
business otherwise.
He commended islanders and
local organizations for protesting
"so vehemently" and the,Driftwood
for "standing behind the
community in this protest."
To our wonderful
customers, our
sincerest thanks,
and our wishes
for a wonderful
Christmas . . .
brimming
with laughter
and good cheer.
John Lomas said the main
objective of the venture is to give
their customers good service, not
just in selling of the items but in
giving advice and counselling on
installation and repair jobs.
Lomas has resided on Salt
Spring since the summer of 1974
and is married to Sharie and they
have a baby girl, Jennie-Marie.
For a brief spell, John worked on
the ferries but his heart was in the
construction business. For many
months now he has been associated
with Pat Baines and his
father, Barney, and it has been a
successful relationship. John has
recently completed an entire
home (with a little help of course)
for his parents to live in on the
road to Vesuvius Bay.
Pat Baines came to the island
in 1973. He is married to Christine
and they have two boys,
Adam and Simon. He joined
forces with his father in business
but now Barney has sold out to his
son. But Barney is too young to
really retire and so is now
working for his son!
Churches unite
to celebrate
Christmas
The churches of Salt Spring
Island united to present two carol
services on Sunday. Enthusiastic
attendance provided the services
with Christmas spirit and joyful
song for the celebration of Christmas
on the island.
The services' were held at St.
George's Anglican Church
through an interdenominational
interest in continuing the annual
event.
The choir numbered about 26,
including voices from all island
churches. Boys and girls participated
in the choir along with the
familiar figures of island church
choirs. May George played the
piano and on her far right Norman
Hind-Smith triumphed over the
organ. The recorder group of the
Anglican Church offered musical
accompaniment to the choir as
well as providing an interlude for
the service.
CONDUCTOR
Choir conductor was Eric
Coombes, previously a five-year
member with the Powell River
Chorus Group. The New Zealand
singer explained that the four
practices before the presentation
consisted of a lot of work in a
condensed amount of time for the
choir.
The service opened with a dim
light through the church and,
between hymns and carols, short
readings were presented by islanders.
The service ended on
Silent Night sung by all, as the
lights went down again.
The services were attended by
about 400 people including all
ages.
GAP REVELLERS ENJOY
COSTUME PARADE, PARTY
Every year Branch 32 of the
Old Age Pensioners' Association
hold a Christmas party. Every
year it is well attended. Every
year they have a fancy dress
parade. Every year they have a
Santa Claus and this year it was a
success again.
It was held as usual at St.
George's Hall and the members
turned out to enjoy the efforts of
hard working President Ethel
Thacker and her committee, organizers
of the event.
Mrs. Thacker was the
"Christmas Fairy" and led the
parade of about a dozen enthusiasts
who were in fancy dress.
Santa (Walter Brigden) made his
rounds of the guests and kept
them in good cheer. Margaret
Cunningham was at the piano to
provide the music for carol singing
and dancing. There were
games. There were goodies.
There was laughter. All the
ingredients for a successful party.
The parade included Santa, of
course, and Mrs. D.M. Jones,
Edith Barber, Betty Brigden,
MfW
Mabel Clark and Ethel Thacker.
Giving Mrs. Thacker support
was Joan Hayward who also
arranged the tea, ice cream and
other goodies. Betty Brigden
gave out candy canes.
Mrs. McRoberts took care of
the draw tickets. Mrs. D.M.
Jones and Edith Barber won the
prizes.
Visitors from Branch 25 of
Sidney were also present.
Tickets were given out for the
annual dinner to take place on
MAINLY MAYNE
BY ELSIE BROWN
Christmas festivities enjoyed
Wind-up parties and Christmas
festivities are in full swing
and organizations are busy finishing
up their affairs for 1976.
The Christmas ship came in to
Miners Bay last Sunday, Dec. 12
and from all reports Santa was his
usual jolly self and was well
received by his many admirers.
His bevy of pirates was as popular
as ever. Islanders extend their
thanks to Bellingham Jaycees for
their continued concern for island
children, which is appreciated
very much. Margaret and Fred
Bennett were assisted by Mrs.
George Harris and Florine Harte
at the refreshment stand. Mayne
Lions were on hand to give Santa
a hand.
The Firemen's Ball held at
the hall last Saturday was very
successful. The decorated hall
was much appreciated.
Get well wishes go to Clara
James who was a victim of a car
accident on Georgina Point Road.
She was admitted to Lady Minto
Hospital where she is being
treated for a knee injury and
cracked ribs. Her two grandchildren
escaped unharmed. We wish
her a speedy recovery. Clara was
returning from the Christmas
Ship.
The Lions dinner at Mayne
Inn on Thursday for single pensioners
was enjoyed by those who
attended. Harry Lane was in
charge of the proceedings, assisted
by Fred Bennett. Mayne Inn
staff catered.
Christmas service at St. Mary
Magdalene church will be held
Sunday, Dec. 26 at 11.30 am.
Rev. James Daniels will conduct
the service.
Kay and Harry Adams are
entertaining their family over the
Christmas season. Son and
daughter-in-law, Ralph and Carol
Spencer and baby son Brent, of
Coquitlam, and another son, Jack
Spencer, from Chatham, Cflltario,
are expected.
Pearl Brau has a bad case of
laryngitis and hopes it clears up
before Christmas as she and
husband, Al, are also entertaining
their family over the holiday.
Others spending Christmas on
the island are Paul and Betty
Klatt, Ken and Joyce Smith and
Jerry and Jean Beaumont.
Welcome back to Betty Ross
who has returned to the island
after a holiday in Hawaii. Also
along were daughters, Barbara.
and Lesley, and Betty's sister,
Shirley Forman and her daughter,
Beth Darby. Jim was left home to
keep the "home fires burning"
and take care of the dog. Visiting
the Ross family is Jim's mother,
Mrs. J. Ross, formerly of North
Vancouver. Jim celebrates his
birthday Boxing Day. Just missed
being a Christmas baby.
Lions Bingo, Saturday, Dec.
18, was well attended and more
than 20 prizes were won. Items
included turkeys, hams, bacons,
fruit baskets, grocery hampers
and $100 for the black-out prize.
Donations were also made by
Miners Bay Trading Post and
Mayne Centre Store. Bob Sauerberg
was the caller and other
Lions on the committee were
Harry Lane, Bill Ferguson, Fred
Bennett, George Harris, Jack
Evans, Alan Lockie and Fred
Dodds. B.C. Telephone donated a
six minute telephone call to
anywhere in the world.
The Mayne Island school concert
was held at the hall, Tuesday
Dec. 14 with a good attendance.
All grades were represented. The
younger ones described the 12
days of Christmas with the aid of
cards. Grades 8 and 9 students
presented a humorous skit which
was written by themselves. Santa
Claus arrived after the concert
and each child received a candy
cane and gingerbread-man made
by Ted Burden and Steve Brunner.
Refreshments were served by
the parents and teachers ending a
most enjoyable evening. The hall
was festive with a Christmas tree
and Christmas decorations.
Teachers Dick and Sue Wagner
took the Grade 8 and 9 year
students on a trip to the mainland
on Dec. 16 where they saw the
play "Count of Monte Cristo" at
the Playhouse Theater in Vancouver.
They had supper, returning
on the 7.20 ferry from Tsawwassen
terminal.
The carol service held at the
hall Sunday, Dec. 19 at 7 pm was
fairly well attended and enjoyed
by those who_were able to be
present. Guests weje Sandy and
Suzanne Macleod of Salt Spring
Island who sang duets with guitar
accompaniment.
Sandy also led the singing of
the carols; Marybelle Jarmah also
sang. Rev. John Rodine and Bill
Sawyer read scripture passages
from Luke, Matthew, and Romans
telling the Christmas story.
Stan Chatwin closed with prayer.
Sandy and Suzanne have two
small boys, Scottie and Kevan.
The course, suggested by
will be a separate coarse, though
considered an extension to the
The proposal has been referred
More LETTERS . . .
Continued from Page 4
back. All went fine until 1 was
more than three quarters of the
way and then one of those signs
was placed beside the road cautioning
drivers that they'd have to
be prepared to stop.
That's fine but this was a stop
of indefinite length. A backhoe
was digging a trench right across
the road. I'm sure it was necessary
but that didn't help at the
moment. "How long will we have
to wait?" No one knew but it,
"W-e-1-1, it could be quite awhile."
A neighbour was ahead
of me and he thought it was
ridiculous too.
I couldn't wait to find out how
long it would be so I had to back
up, turn around and come home
the long way. This was before our
wind storm. Perhaps the Highways
Department might let Salt
Spring Islanders have the essential
signs to save driving extra
miles and then arriving too late.
CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR CANADIANS
Lakehill Gallager 2
A Christmas gift came to the
Salt Spring Rotary Canadians
Saturday with a well-earned victory
over the Lakehill Gallagher in
the "A" league of Victoria soccer.
The dominance of the local
"A" stars in this league has
tagged them with the second
highest performance rating in
Lower Mainland Island league
soccer.
Only Gorge F.C., chosen from
over 500 boys, exceeds their
rating. In the New Year, with
practice and the same determination
Salt Spring could turn the
Jeague on its ear. The local boys,
have disturbed the complacency
of Victoria's Trojans by starting
late. Five games behind,_ they
have climbed the ladder of league
competition relentlessly. Now
they are only one point off
qualifying for the vaunted Provincial
Cup play, which they will
Local Girls out-hustle,
out-score Saanich squad
GIRLS DIVISION
Salt Spring Girls 2
Saanich Indians 1
Beaming with confidence, the
local girls out-hustled, out-played
and out-scored the Saanich squad
to gain an emotional victory.
The victory, the Girls first
over the Indians, moved them
into first place in the league
standing.
After losing the first game of
the season, the Salt Spring team
has fought week after week to
regain top spot, and after a string
of six games without a defeat
their goal has been achieved.
The Girls' victory was the
result of 11 players who worked
100% for the win as they continuously
pressed the Indians
throughout the match.
Brenda Murray once again
was the scoring hero. "The
Road-runner" twice took passes
from Patsy Reynolds to score the
second goal coming late in the
game and clinching victory for
Salt Spring. She received strong
support from forwards Donna
Moulton, Michelle Anderson, and
Shauneen Spence. Their determination
and offensive thrust easily
could have given Salt Spring
many more goals.
The defence was anchored by
their super half line of Sunday
and Vicky Byron and Cathy
Anderson and hard-tackling
backs, Andrea Simard and Susan
Chew. Their tenacity and hustle
thwarted most of the Saanich
offensive forays and made life a
lot easier for goalie, Janice Hull.
In the dying moments of the
game, the tension mounted as the
Girls knew they were on the verge
of victory. When the final whistle
In Saturday's game the forwards
produced some of the
strategic plays which have been
practised for hours, relieving the
pressure on the defence. It was a
delight to see Legg and Quesnel
distributing the ball to the consternation
of the opposition. Mc-
Fadyen returned to scoring f6rm
with the opening goal and Webb
aggressively gained the equalizer
as well as the winning goal late in
the game.
Defencemen MacLean, Black
Tamboline, Ten Veen, Foerster
and Toynbee had a difficult first
half but showed significant improvement
in the later stages to
give Walker more protection and
a second half shut-out. It was
similar with the half-backs of
Hengstler and Spence who both
found their truer form later in the
game and brought tremendous
pressure to bear upon Lakehills
staggering defence. Under these
circumstances Walker's "property"
inside the 18 yard line
became less frequented and he
was able to make his characteristic
rushes to the limits.
Congratulations are due to the
entire team for their performance
in 1976 and all their supporters,
coach and manager wish them a
BY HOVERCRAFT
*
Quick trip to Champagne City
BY FRANK RICHARDS
That's the Hovercraft from
Dover to Boulogne.
If the Hovercraft is smooth,
the sea is smooth. You don't see
the surface very clearly. But you
feel the smooth passage. If the
sea is rough, th.en the ride is
rough. If the seas are running
high, the Hovercraft stays at
Hovercraft to Boulogne:
flying from Dover.
Last time we were in Boulogne
was in 1947, when the evidence of
war was everywhere. The town,
the streets, the docks were still
battle-scarred at that time.
In 1976 there is not a sign of
warfare to be seen other than the
• odd military installation still
standing amid other structures.
Nearest thing to the war
damage that you see in France
today are the frequent wrecked
cars along the side of the road,
awaiting collection. Small cars
travelling at very high speeds on
quite narrow roads seem to leave
a fair amount of debris.
BACK TO EPERNAY
It was our second trip to
France in 30 years and we
heading, once again to Epernay,
in the Marne, where champagne
and our old friends all hail from.
It was a long tale. In 1940 I
had been a regular guest to
dinner with Andre Rosman and
his family in the Marne city.
Came the German advance and I
was moved out without warning. I
moved around France for several
weeks before sailing out of Nantes.
In 1945, when the last German
had moved back to the north of
the international line, I wrote to
the couple who had befriended
me and learned that they were
still alive and well. We enjoyed a
very warm reunion in 1947.
Since coming to live in Canada
I had maintained an annual
communication with them.
This trip to Epernay last
month was a sequel to a long-established,
very distant friendship.
Paris, at the end of the
Autorail trip was unchanged.
From the Gare du Nord to the
Blvd. Magenta, the city looked
just as it did the last time. Trains
were more comfortable and immaculately
clean.
TWO LOYALTIES
In this respect you got the idea
that the French railway staffs
were proud of the service they
offered and they put everything
into every task necessary to keep
up the tradition. British Rail does
not appear to enjoy the same
loyalty.
Reunion at Epernay brought
out everything except the fatted
calf. We had champagne in the
morning and lunch at a local
hotel. During the afternoon we
visited the champagne cellars and
finished the day in reminiscences.
Their grandson arrived and
offered us a trip into Paris with
him the following morning. We
jumped at the offer.
If there is a typical Frenchman
that was Gerard. Dancing on his
toes, rather than simply walk, he
talked with his hands as well as
his eyes, while he laughed most
of the time.
He laughed en route to Paris
and he laughed as he explained
he was heading for London and
we made a detour to the north.
First stop was at Compiegne
to take a look at the railway car in
which Marshal Foch signed the
Armistice in 1918.
Second stop was Amiens for
late lunch.
LAST TIME I SAW AMIENS
I knew Amiens. It was in that
city that I first heard an air raid
warning siren. That was in 1940.
On to Boulogne, we discovered
that the Hovercraft was grounded
and we had to make a detour
to Calais.
About 25 miles in about an
hour. Nothing to it!
As we came down a long
descent, two cars wide and nothing
coming south, we were touching
100 mph. And it was a small
car.
We made it.
At Dover we ascertained how
to get to Kingston and with only
one stop for information we drove
through the heart of London. And
our driver spoke not a word of
English and understood not a
single traffic sign.
That was the tough part of the
journey as we ignored speed
limits, warnings and cautions to
tear up the road in the bottom
right-hand corner of England; but
what of it? That's how the Brits
all drive!
When we finally stopped in
Kingston, we breathed more easily
and set out for Maidenhead.
And that was some quick trip
to France!
More About...
Galiano Club issues statement
Continued from Page 8
discussion at the committee meeting
on Wednesday, Nov. 17. Of
the 12 committee members, two
were absent that night due to
illness. Our discussion went on
for almost two hours as we dealt
with the topic from two points of
view:
(a) The financial needs of the
club if we were to enter into any
capital expenditure, and the possibility
of drawing upon the Bluffs
Trust Fund for this purpose,
Provided that the fund were
augmented by money from the
sale of timber within section four;
and
(b) The need to reopen section
four and make it a usable part of
the bluffs Park facility by restoring
the hiking and bridle trails,
and making the area more readily
accessible in the event of forest
fire.
At the outset, there were
certain points of agreement:
(1) Only Galiano people
should be involved IF it were
decided to take out the timber.
(2) Rigid controls would have
to be instituted in the selective
logging procedure to ensure that
May every happiness be your
at this loveliest of seasons.
With our fond gratitude ...
the minimum amount of damage
would ensue.
(3) It was essential that the
Club achieve its objective in the
restoration of the land and making
it suitable for park purposes.
(4) A very carefully worded
contract with the logging company
would have to be drawn up
whereby these provisions would
be clearly set forth.
Although we had found
Messrs. Baines and Weatherell
most co-operative, there were still
many aspects of the question
which we had to explore. Two of
our members were appointed to
meet with them, and the club
officers agreed to consult with
other men on the Island experienced
in the industry who could
give us the benefit of their advice .
on what measures we should take
for the protection of the land, with
particular reference to the clean
up operation.
The committee unanimously
agreed to pursue the matter and
report back to the next meeting. It
'was felt that by then a draft
contract could be drawn up
containing the provisions we were
seeking, and that terms could be
set down which would be accept
able to both parties. At that time,
when we felt reasonably satisfied
that all points of concern were
covered, we would decide how
best to present the proposal to the
people of Galiano so that everyone
would be aware of, and
understand, what was involved.
VOICES OF PROTEST
As stated, this discussion took
place on Wednesday, Nov. 17. On
Saturday three days later, the
first voices of protest were heard.
The reaction from a certain
segment of the Island population
has made it impossible fo pursue
the matter any further at this
time'. We do not have a draft
contract, as we do not have
Messrs. Baines and Weatherell
In exploring the feasibility of
