Whether it’s true or not, work pays the rent, it gives us a kind of social standing, and it takes up a great deal of our adult life. Work is what we love to hate rather than love to do, yet we’re scared of losing it. Work is a magical kingdom: the fi eld of self-fulfi llment for some, and a tedious treadmill for others. Whether you’ve learnt your craft or you’ve been dropped in deep waters, whether you like it or not, the work you do defi nes a part of you. Don’t fret, we’re not trying to go all philosophical on you, we’re just trying to work out some work-related issues. Caught up between two long weekends (we know you’re as looking forward to May 1st as we are), in this issue we’re concentrating on what makes our working life feel less like a rat-race and more like a time well spent. In First Steps, we give you the bright-eyed students behind KözJóTett (Public Good Deed) who share their views on volunteering. Apparently, it looks sexy on your CV. For more, though less sexy, facts and trivia regarding the world of work, see our DYK page. Whatever your attitude toward work is, rest assured in the knowledge that you’re not alone. If you need proof, turn to our Book Leak. To whet you appetite for strike, we share the legendary and true story on how the Hungarian orange nearly came to being. If it wasn’t for the climate, the strong socialist work morale would have made it happen. Rebellious thoughts aside, working can be fun. Especially when you’ve got some motivating tunes to listen to. In Music Minutes, we selected old classics that may not make you work more vigorously, but will make you smile nevertheless. To make your working hours more fun, we collected sports and activities you can actually do in the offi ce; there’s even a clever device that helps you burn calories while you’re sitting by your desk. Clever doesn’t stop there. In Game&Gadget, you’ll fi nd plenty of devices that make life in the offi ce more bearable, and Under Construction displays some of the most exciting offi ce buildings in Budapest. Does it matter if they’re real or not when some of them must be a real pleasure to work in? But hang on. If you’re reading this at work, stop. Stop working, that is. Leave the offi ce, put on your sunglasses, go to a nearby park, sit on a bench or on the grass, and breathe. It takes practice, but by the time summer’s here, you’ll have mastered the craft. Take a break, you’ve earned it! Justin Case BUDAPEST FUNZINE 1
