Storage is “the placement of a household item during periods when it is not<br />

being used <strong>for</strong> its primary function” (Boyd & McConocha, 1996, p. 233). For example,<br />

when a consumer is not wearing a shirt, the shirt resides in storage.<br />

Active Clothing Item<br />

An active clothing item is an item that an individual perceives as one that<br />

he/she wears, or more specifically, one that the individual believes moves between<br />

use and storage over time.<br />

Active Inventory<br />

Active inventory is a composite of all active clothing items within an<br />

individual’s possession.<br />

Inactive Clothing Item<br />

An inactive clothing item is an item that an individual perceives as one that<br />

that he/she does not wear, yet still has in his/her possession.<br />
