Identifi cation of contaminants in
vehicle fuel tank caps using FTIR ATRmicroscopy
Application note
Materials testing and research
Introduction
Manufacturers of parts and components to the automotive industry are
required to assure the quality of their products, and FTIR spectroscopy is
widely used for this purpose. In this example, it was apparent that fuel tank
caps were being contaminated by an unknown material during production.
The contaminants were ~20–300 µm in size. As the unknown particles were
small in size, an FTIR microspectroscopy technique was used to investigate.
