PROFILE OF THE LAGOS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AND INDUSTRY
Brief History
The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry,
which was established in 1888, is the Premier
Chamber of Commerce in Nigeria. It was
incorporated in 1950 as a non-profit making
organisation, limited by Guarantee under the
Companies Act of 1948. The primary objective of the
Chamber is to promote, support or oppose legislative
or other measures affecting trade, industry,
commerce and agriculture as well as represent the
opinion of the business community on these matters
in particular and the economy as a whole.
The Chamber Today
The Chamber has grown impressively from a
membership of 14 in 1888 to over 1,500 today. Since
its incorporation, the Chamber has continued to play
a significant role in the economic growth of Lagos in
particular and Nigeria in general through the
promotion and development of commercial and
industrial opportunities as its members control about
80% of the industrial wealth in the Lagos area, which
itself accounts for over 60% of economic activities in
Nigeria.
The Lagos Chamber is governed by a Council of 60
members. The Council is headed by a President who
is assisted by two Deputy Presidents, six Vice
Presidents, a Treasurer and a Deputy Treasurer. The
current President is Asiwaju S. K. Onafowokan
OON, JP.
Members join one or more of the 9 Trade Groups
through which the bulk of the Chamber activities are
performed. Moreover, 16 Service Committees assist
on policy formulation and decision-making, of
which the Executive Committee, the working body
of the Council, is the most important one. Trade
Group and Service Committee Chairmen are
members of the Council.
The Secretariat, which is the administrate and
executive arm of the Chamber, contributes to policy
5
formulation and is responsible for the
implementation of approved policies and
programmes. It is headed by a Director-General, and
has 35 staff. The current DirectorGeneral is Mr.
Muda Yusuf.
Relations with Government and Other relevant
Bodies
The Chamber, as the representative organ of the
business community, is the voice of the organised
private sector in Lagos. It maintains regular
consultations with the government on policies and
measures affecting business and the economy.
At the national level the Chamber is a leading and
active member of the Nigerian Association of
Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and
Agriculture (NACCIMA) When necessary, it makes
representation to the Federal Government on issues
of interest to the business community and the
economy.
It has long established links with International
Organisations such as the Federation of West African
Chambers of Commerce as well as direct contacts
with other foreign Chambers of Commerce
throughout the trading world and it can thus give
world-wide service to its members, individually and
collectively.
What the Chamber offers
I. As stated earlier, the Lagos Chamber of
Commerce and Industry was established for the
promotion and protection of Trade and Industry
and to represent and express the opinion of the
business community on matters affecting trade
and industry in the city of Lagos, the Lagos Port
Complex, Lagos State and where applicable, the
whole Federation. It is a nonprofit making
organisation and its income and property are
applied solely for the promotion of its objectives.
