when she saw the tears in his eyes.
He touched her cheek lightly. “I’m not asking you to make everything okay, Ness. I’m just asking you
not to give up on us yet.” His voice broke, and a tear fell down his cheek. He looked down and
sniffled.
“Oh, Jake,” she whimpered. Seeing his pain was somehow worse than anything else that had
happened that day. She found herself reaching out to him, wrapping her arms around his neck. He
leaned down and rested his forehead on her shoulder. She did the same. She wondered briefly if
this would be the last time they would embrace.
“Please?” he whispered.
“I promise I’ll try. I can’t promise anything else.”
“That’s all I’m asking.” He lifted his head and lightly pet her hair. “I love you.”
“I know.” It killed her not being able to say it back, but she wasn’t going to lie to him or give him
false hope. Her eyes filled with tears again. “Be safe, Jake.”
He nodded and leaned forward to kiss her cheek. “You too, Ness.” After a moment of hesitation, he
made himself leave.
