“Teaching Club/Recreational Players to Play Like
the Pros”
by Brad Humphreys, USPTA Certifi ed
Our USPTA San Diego Division is alive and well! We
are lucky to have such great-dedicated leadership in our
Division and a large number of teaching professionals
willing to take time out of their busy schedules to share
their knowledge.
Another USPTA San Diego Division successful TPFL
took place on September 5, <strong>2012</strong>, at the La Jolla Beach
and Tennis Club, thanks to over 25 teaching professionals
attending and participating! Most of those attending seized
the opportunity to share their expertise and engaged an
open mind in thought provoking dialog.
A special “Thank You” to Marc Assaraf, Derrick Miller and Matt Previdi for helping me get things started.
Following is an extremely condensed version of some of our “Tennis Tips”:
Develop the athlete and then the tennis player.
Soccer ball return of serve. Teaches player to move with their feet, stepping out at a 45-degree angle.
Start play right away with serve and return. Run for every ball in or out.
Spilt step, squeak shoes, lean forward on toes. Anticipate and turn right or left quick.
Two steps for groundstrokes, one step for volley.
Utilize ITF Coaching handout ‘Assessing Your Tennis’.
Volley – push the door open, do not slam it shut.
Keep elbow in front of body on volleys.
See backside of strings when hitting volley.
Lift glass of water up for the toss without a shower, push label on ball straight up, let wrist bend down as
hand goes up.
Use exhale words like “hit”, watch the “ball”, to create breathing, relaxation, release of tension.
Eight board theory – toss off the hip, integrate with body. Top four male players do not land with both feet
at the same time in a split step – they land 1–2, or “tap–tap”.
All movement begins from the core. Abdominal center turns fi rst to hit a volley.
Teach like the pros play.
The better the player, the less they think. Train student to develop sub conscious. Imagine a diamond shaped
graph of the developing tennis player's thinking. When starting to learn tennis, the beginner does not know
what to think and the expert thinks very little. (In between there may be a lot of thinking.)
Focus on the big picture. Students work on strokes, pros work on strategy.
“Mind your own business.” Face ahead, focus ahead in doubles.
