Gretchen Magers was recently appointed the new<br />

head coach for women's tennis at Clarem<strong>on</strong>t-Mudd-<br />

Scripps College.<br />

“Gretchen brings a phenomenal background of competitive<br />

experiences in tennis: Collegiate, Internati<strong>on</strong>al,<br />

Olympic, and as a teaching pro,” Sutt<strong>on</strong> said.<br />

“All this is coupled with her enthusiasm, energy, and<br />

excitement for the opportunity of working with a team<br />

of student-athletes who have the potential to excel<br />

in collegiate tennis. We are very fortunate to have<br />

Coach Magers in our program and I look forward to<br />

the c<strong>on</strong>tinued growth and success of Athena tennis.”<br />

Magers has been the head women’s tennis coach for<br />

San Diego City College since 2008. In additi<strong>on</strong> to<br />

her coaching experience, Magers served as the head<br />

tennis professi<strong>on</strong>al at Peninsula Tennis Club from<br />

1996-<str<strong>on</strong>g>2012</str<strong>on</strong>g>. She has also served as tennis professi<strong>on</strong>al<br />

at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club, Lomas Santa<br />

Fe Country Club and Fairbanks Ranch Country Club.<br />

“I can’t wait to get to Clarem<strong>on</strong>t and help the CMS<br />

Athenas tennis team reach new heights,” said Magers.<br />

“It is a dream come true for me to be at a school like<br />

the Clarem<strong>on</strong>t-Mudd-Scripps College. The academic<br />

reputati<strong>on</strong>s, the excepti<strong>on</strong>al student bodies and world<br />

class facilities make for an ideal envir<strong>on</strong>ment for our<br />

student-athletes to thrive. I am so grateful for the op-<br />

portunity to work with the returning players, incoming<br />

players and our capable tennis staff of Kathy Settles and<br />

Hank Krieger. The sky is the limit with this team.”<br />

Magers played 10 years <strong>on</strong> the WTA tour and was a top<br />

20 singles and doubles player. She was a quarterfi nalist<br />

at the U.S. Open, French Open and Wimbled<strong>on</strong>. She<br />

represented the <strong>United</strong> <strong>States</strong> in the 1984 Olympics, the<br />

World University Games, the Pan American Games and<br />

the Senior ITF World Champi<strong>on</strong>ships. Collegiately, she<br />

was a four-time All-American at Trinity University where<br />

she was NCAA doubles champi<strong>on</strong> in 1983 and NCAA<br />

runner-up in singles and doubles in both 1985 and 1986.<br />

Magers has a Bachelor’s in Physical Educati<strong>on</strong> from Trinity<br />

with a minor in Biology. She also earned a Master’s<br />

in Sports Administrati<strong>on</strong> from California University of<br />

Pennsylvania.<br />

The San Diego Divisi<strong>on</strong> will miss Gretchen and we wish<br />

her well!
