community newsletter
JULY, 2012
From the General manager
I would like to take this
opportunity to promote the
“new look” Glenden Pioneer.
The Glenden Pioneer is funded
by Newlands Coal as a service
to the community and is
designed to keep the community
informed and act as a conduit
for information across the broad
range of interests in Glenden.
The Pioneer started as small
black and white publication
published fortnightly, evolved
into a larger monthly colour
version, and is now taking the
step into the electronic age.
This new ‘E’ format is intended
to improve the look and feel of
the newsletter in line with other
community communication
materials as well as reduce the
environmental impact of
the publication.
2012 is presenting a challenging
business environment and the
Newlands Operational Teams
are working hard to adapt
our organisation accordingly.
Newlands remains committed
to Glenden and you will have
noticed construction has
commenced on further family
style accommodation in and
around Glenden. A major
refurbishment of the C&K
Childcare Outdoor Learning
area has been completed and
the results speak for themselves.
Newlands has worked with
various stakeholders to ensure
that as many services as possible
are available for the community.
It is very important that we as
a community support these
health, commercial and other
services so that they remain
viable and continue to provide a
valuable service in Glenden.
Glenden continues to be a
family friendly community,
congratulations to all those
residents who have made an
effort to welcome the new
members to our community.
I hope you find this issue
informative and continue to
support this initiative through
your contributions.
Together with Newlands Coal, the Isaac Regional Council,
C&K Central and the Glenden Community, the Glenden
of the right reasons!
On the 31st of May, Madonna McLeod, Jodie-Anne Mace and
Kellie Doherty, flew to a gala function in Brisbane to accept the
finalists award in the Workforce Council Innovation Awards. Glenden
had become an inspiration for many other businesses within the
Community Services Sector. Unfortunately they did not win, however
one of the judges spoke with C&K management to congratulate them
on the wonderful service they had in Glenden. The amount
and quality of the applicants in this year’s awards was outstanding.
Many businesses such as Qld Ambulance, Mission Australia and
Boys Town were among the finalists, so to be in this company was a
truly humbling occasion.
Glenden state school
showcase Awards for excellence in schools – regional winner 2012
For the third consecutive year
Glenden State School has
been announced as a Regional
winner in the Showcase Awards
for Excellence in Schools.
Glenden State School received
the award in the category
of Middle Schooling for our
Year 7 transition program
“Creating New Horizons”.
Congratulations to Mrs Podlich
and the team of primary and
secondary teachers for their
hard work on the program since
its implementation in 2009.
Glenden now progresses to the
next round of judging with State
finalists announced in August.
Below is an extract of the award
submission:
Creating New Horizons is a
school based initiative, which has
been developing since 2008 with
the collaboration of secondary
and primary school staff. This
program was fully operational
in 2009 and continues to be at
the forefront of curriculum and
quality teaching at Glenden
State School.
The program offers students
the opportunities to engage
in a consistent approach with
Principal for the Day
innovative learning that has
created a supportive and
challenging environment
for students.
The program is aimed to
increase student achievements,
well-being and confidence
in Years 5 to 9 and prepare
students utilising a shared
vision and consistent approach
between secondary and primary.
The program involves Year 7
students actively engaging in
secondary school curriculum
as part of their everyday
schooling through cross campus
teaching initiatives. Students
are challenged and connected
through a program built around
the core teaching of English,
Maths and Science, with specialist
subjects delivered by secondary
teachers. Positive, caring,
connected relationships built on
mutual respect are developed.
There is an accepted expectation
that all staff show a vested
interested in every student’s
outcomes: academically, socially
and emotionally.
The program ‘Creating New
Horizons’ has been set up to
ensure the following areas
Principal for a Day was held at Glenden State School on Friday 21st
May as part of State Education Week 2012 celebrations. Principal for
a Day is an annual program that enables schools to forge important
partnerships with the community and parents. The Principals for a
Day gain an insight into the daily operations of state schools, and
daily operations within the classroom.
Glenden State School had the privilege to have local Practitioner
Jenny Cleaver as our honorary Principal for the Day. Doctor Jenny
had the opportunity to discuss the strategic school direction, review
school data and visit classrooms throughout the morning. I thank
Doctor Jenny for her time and interest in our school.
are addressed and continual
improvement is made for
students:
• Shared and collaborated
planning and practices
between secondary and
primary sectors
• Core elements delivered by
quality teachers
• Specialist teachers delivering
specialist subjects
• To ensure that students are
engaged
• Continual improvement made
for each and every student
• Monitoring of student
progress and growth for
academic, social and
emotional wellbeing
Learning, achievement and
engagement of our students
is vital to our school, this is
evident in our unrelenting
focus on quality teaching and
student outcomes. At Glenden
State School we have taken a
whole school approach to our
curriculum and learning. Our
school improvement agenda is
focussed on Literacy, Numeracy,
Data Analysis, SWPB and
engaging the whole community.
red carpet Glamour coming to Glenden
August 11, 2012 promises a night of Red Carpet Glamour
at the Glenden Recreation Centre, courtesy of the Glenden
State School Parents & Citizen’s annual fundraiser the “200
Club.” Come dressed in your finest, or maybe as your favourite
Hollywood Siren or Silver Screen Leading Man. It is a great
opportunity for the whole community to not only get together
for a great night out but to support the Glenden State School
P&C in providing funds to maintain great facilities and resources
for Glenden’s children. Being a small town, fundraising
opportunities are limited so the “200 Club” is the most
important event on the P&C calendar to raise funds for the year.
The major cash prize draws of $5000, $2500 and $1000 are always a
big draw for the event. Mackay band “Hot, Hot, Hot” will entertain
the crowd. Ticket purchases include canapés, a sumptuous three
course sit down meal, dancing, and lots of fun and prize draws. Sam
from Pixzel images will be there to capture the night’s frivolities.
Tickets cost $140.00 per couple and are available for purchase
from the Glenden State School office (P: (07) 4964 2333). Can’t
make it on the night – then purchase a $100 ticket which will
still entitle you to be in the draw for the major cash prizes. The
Red Carpet will roll out at 6.30pm, so purchase your tickets and
come and have a fantastic night out.

Many house fires are caused by the unsafe use of heaters.
The following fire safety tips are recommended:
1. For portable heating, choose models that have automatic safety
switches that turn the heater off if tipped over.
2. Keep portable electric heaters away from wet areas to avoid the
possibility of electric shock.
3. Keep heaters well clear from items that might burn. A minimum of
one (1) metre clearance from clothes, bedding, furniture, curtains
and other combustibles is required.
4. Children and pets must be supervised when heaters are in use.
JULY, 2012 6
minister in moranbah to hear regional needs
As part of his bid to rebuild bridges with Queensland councils,
Local Government Minister, David Crisafulli, met in Moranbah
yesterday with the Isaac Regional Council’s Mayor, Councillors,
Chief Executive Officer and other Senior Executive staff to
discuss the region’s needs.
IRC Mayor Anne Baker said the key talking point was the State
Government’s Urban Land Development Authorities approved
camp development for 3258 rooms and the critically adverse
impact it would have on the community and Council’s ability to
provide affordable housing and infrastructure.
“Building the camp on residential land removes a big portion
of prime land that could otherwise be used for family housing,”
she said.
“With mining leases all around the town boundary, all other sites
are landlocked.
“We’re in the middle of a boom yet businesses are closing
because of unaffordable housing and rental – who is going to
service the increased population?”
Mr Crisafulli said the development decision would not be
called in and asked if he could help in other ways to lessen the
development’s impact.
Cr Baker said other issues discussed included funding sources
for roads; possible solutions for Clermont’s aged care facility
council launches on-line learning service
suffering from lack of funding for adequate staff and getting
grain haulage back on trains instead of trucking because
unsealed roads could not cope with the heavy loads.
She said her vision was to have all stakeholders come together
with open minds to discuss issues and find solutions to help
sustain Isaac communities for the long term and called on the
Minister‘s help.
“It’s very sad to know that as the engine room of the State, with
the amount of money coming out of this region, our communities
are the most poorly invested in community infrastructure.
“Isaac Regional Council has been very proactive in delivering
affordable accommodation through initiatives such as the Isaac
Views Affordable Housing and the establishment of the Isaac
Affordable Housing Trust.”
Minister Crisafulli said Queensland Councils now had an
understanding parliament in place and he intended to make
changes to the Local Government Act to allow mayors and
councillors to take charge of their own destinies; to allow polls
to take place and enable neighbouring councils to share staff
and equipment.
He also suggested Council report any local election
inefficiencies and that if a division was left without a nomination,
a bi-election could be held.
Isaac Regional Council (IRC) has launched a free, on-line, on-demand tutoring service for job-seekers and adult learners and
is holding demonstrations at six regional libraries.
Lifelong Learning builds on the success of the library’s popular yourtutor service for school and TAFE students, initiated eight
years ago as a free, after-school homework centre.
IRC Chief Executive Officer Mark Crawley said the online service could help people write and format resumes and job
applications; gain literacy and numeracy skills from maths to writing better emails and reports; and seek writing appraisals.
“Lifelong Learning is for people who want to continue learning or simply brush up on a particular area such as public
speaking, grammar, punctuation and writing skills,” Mr Crawley said.
“Anyone seeking a new job or wanting to re-enter the workforce can use the service to learn, without cost, the
necessary skills.
“Adult learners can improve their job-readiness, increase experience with online tools and learn literacy and numeracy skills.
“Lessons are delivered on-line in a virtual classroom, with live teacher instruction.”
Qualified teachers are available on-line between 6pm to 10pm weekdays.
With a library card, residents can sign in and access Lifelong Learning at www.yourtutor.com.au

Avoid Piling on the Pounds this winter
As winter approaches there
is always the temptation to
warm ourselves with comfort
food and oversized coats but
maintaining healthy habits in
the cooler months can set the
tone for the rest of the year.
Queensland Country Health
Fund General Manager,
Aaron Newman, said recent
cold weather should not
stop people exercising and
maintaining a good diet.
Mr Newman said blowing out
on our health regime during
one particular time of the year
could leave us with a lot of
work to do to catch up when
the cold weather was gone.
“It is hard to get motivated
when it starts to get a bit cold
outside but the extra effort will
put you in a better position for
the remainder of the year.
Adults should aim to get 30
to 60 minutes of exercise
nearly every day to maintain
good health.
“There are a range of indoor
and outdoor activities you can
participate in during winter
and they don’t have to cost the
earth,” Mr Newman said.
qccu.com.au | qldcountryhealth.com.au
“You could try finding a heated
pool for swimming; local PCYCs
also offer a range of activities
which are worth checking out.”
Increasing activity levels is the
first step in preventing winter
weight gain, however having
a healthy diet also plays an
important part.
Nutritionist Lauren Nugent said
comfort food didn’t need to be
fat and carb rich
“Many winter foods can be
nutritious, warming and keep
that body beach ready.
“Breakfasts like porridge,
poached eggs or baked
beans give you a great start
and if you need something
sweet throughout the day
try poached fruit with low fat
custard or a hot chocolate on
skinny milk.”
Significant weight gain can lead
to serious health risks such as
diabetes, heart disease, stroke
and some cancers.
For more tips on healthy eating
during winter visit Queensland
The Mackay Marina Run, a community running event including a half marathon, 8km fun run and 5km corporate challenge was held in
Mackay on Sunday 3rd of June. Newlands Coal sponsored 34 individuals that competed in the corporate challenge as 4 teams.
Over 839 people participated in the 5km corporate challenge and the four Newlands teams finished in 5th, 20th, 40th and 86th place
on the team’s ladder. There were some fantastic individual results as well with several male and female runners finishing in the top 20
individual times.
The event is a major fundraiser for the Mackay West Rotary Club and local branch of the Leukaemia foundation. Congratulations to
the Newlands Coal teams and all individuals that participated in any of the events.

See the world differently.
We’re Different. We’re Xstrata.
We’re different to most mining companies, younger,
with less bureaucracy. We think differently, act
differently, add value differently. But our hunch
is you’re different too. You sustain long-term
friendships as well as growth. You believe in your
ability to succeed and achieve. And we believe in
you too. We encourage you to take responsibility.
Challenge the status quo. Ask questions. Make
decisions. Be accountable. In this way you’ll grow as
a person and valued long-time employee. You’ll get
the recognition you deserve, as well as the rewards.
You’ll enjoy security and success. Because the
resources we value most are the people we employ.
