Glenden C & K
We are now half way through the year! It’s a little scary when you say it like that, isn’t it? A lot has changed at the
centre during the past few months. We held our very first ‘Parent Night’ which was a great success. During the
evening we showcased many new and exciting projects we wish to undertake by the end of the year including the
introduction of Interactive Whiteboards and the beginning of our Outdoor Environment Project. Our ‘Backyard’
Project will be our main focus for this year.
Outdoor Environments
In the past few years, we have begun to see compelling evidence in the advantages of children using the Outdoor
Environment as the third teacher. Statistics suggest that:
∗ Children who play regularly in natural environments show more advanced motor fitness, including co-ordination,
balance and agility and they are sick less often (Granh, et al 1997, Fjortoft & Sageie 2001).
∗ When children play in natural environments their play is more diverse, imaginative and creative. It fosters
language and collaborative skills (Moore & Wong 1997, Taylor, et al. 1998, Fjortoft 2000).
∗ Exposure to natural environments improves children’s cognitive development by improving their awareness,
reasoning and observational skills (Kahn 1999).
∗ Spending time in nature has been shown to reduce stress (Kahn 1999).
∗ Children who play in natural settings play in more diverse, imaginative and creative ways and show improved
language and collaboration skills (Kidsafe 2008).
∗ Children who play regularly in natural settings are sick less often. Mud, sand, water, leaves, sticks, pinecones
and gum nuts can help stimulate children’s immune system as well as their imagination (Kidsafe 2008).
Links to Early Years Learning Framework
Outdoor learning spaces are a feature of Australian learning environments. They offer a vast array of possibilities not
available indoors. Play spaces in natural environments include plants, trees, edible gardens, sand, rocks, mud,
water and other elements from nature. These spaces invite open ended interactions, spontaneity, risk-taking,
exploration, discovery and connection with nature. They foster an appreciation of the natural environment, develop
environmental awareness and provide a platform for ongoing environmental education. Indoor and outdoor
environments support all aspects of children’s learning and invite conversations between children, early childhood
educators, families and the broader community. They promote opportunities for sustained shared thinking and
collaborative learning. Materials enhance learning when they reflect what is natural and familiar and also introduce
novelty to provoke interest and more complex and increasingly abstract thinking.
Environments and resources can also highlight our responsibilities for a sustainable future and promote children’s
understanding about their responsibility to care for the environment. They can foster hope, wonder and knowledge
about the natural world.
Our Outdoor Project
In Glenden, we are extremely lucky, as we have huge backyards at the centre for the children. Our possibilities are
endless, limited only by our imagination! The new improvements to our outdoor environment will include such things
as dry creek beds, platforms and decks, digging pits, boulders and low trees. Natural pathways made from pebbles,
sleepers, pavers and rocks will also feature throughout the yard. This natural environment will encourage an
enormous amount of play based learning.
Some ideas to include in our new Outdoor Environment:

Risk Taking
At a recent Early Childhood Conference, I attended a lecture on ‘Childhood Risk Taking’. This was a huge
eye-opener for myself and really hit home the changes to playground risks, which we do not allow our children to
take in this day and age. This lecture focussed on society creating an environment where children were discouraged
from taking small risks in their environments. For example, it discussed how play equipment is now boring to most
children as it poses no risk and therefore no excitement! I thought about this statement and applied its theory to our
own environment. How many times do you go to a playground and see, the boys especially, climbing over the sign
that says, ‘Do Not Climb ON This Play Equipment’. Being enclosed in these wonderfully safe, McDonald’s type
playground equipment, poses no element of danger. As a parent this seems great. It is our role as parents to protect
our children and watch out for their safety. But then consider as children ourselves, the thrill of climbing to the
highest branch in the tree or bouncing on a trampoline without a safety net! Yes, we may all have had a buster or
two. Some of us may even have broken an arm at one stage, but think of the excitement, the thrill and the learning
that occurred whilst we were doing it. When we did get hurt, we learnt a very valuable lesson for the next time. My
lesson was usually, ‘Don’t listen to your older brother’!
Our role as Early Childhood Educators is to balance the risks, with the possibility for learning. In our natural outdoor
environment at the centre, we would provide the children with many exciting possibilities which the children would
not see as actually being ‘safe’. For example, instead of climbing frames with ladders, the children would have a
selection of different shaped boulders. These would have a maximum height restriction of 0.5m as per our
regulations. They would be intertwined into their landscape and the children would have opportunities to climb these.
They may ask to place a ladder in between or come up with another idea to extend on their play, through the
incorporation of natural and manmade products. There are many possibilities which could stem from a ‘boulder’
where as a fixed ladder only really serves one purpose. Once this has been conquered, the children usually move
onto another challenge, never to return to the ladder.
Dry creek beds will have a tap close by so the children can use their imaginations to create an unlimited amount of
learning possibilities. A natural environment provides an opportunity for children to continuously change and mould
their surroundings to suite their individual needs.
We are all very excited about this project. We are only in the initial stages and we will need the community’s support
and assistance.
Firstly - We need a LANDSCAPER!
Is anyone in the community or does anyone have any contacts with a great
landscaper who could assist us?
If you could help us, please phone myself on 49589 304, so that we can take
this project to the next stage.
Also, if you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact me.
Road Maintenance
Isaac Regional Council asks for patience from residents as
important maintenance work is carried out on our region’s
roads.
Recent weather events have caused extensive damage. A
great deal of time and resources are required to restore these
roads to previous conditions.
Work is already well underway on ‘emergent work’ (roads
where the damage is considered potentially life-threatening).
Council has assessed all 3000 kilometres of our region’s roads
for flood damage and we are now just waiting for funding and
approval from State Government.
During this time, we ask residents to be understanding of the
situation and to drive carefully and to prevailing conditions.
Dragline Dragline Dragline 3 3 3 and and Shovel Shovel 1 1 moves
moves
We’re nearly there……....DL03 has been relocating from Suttor Creek to Eastern Creek since the 6 th
May. That’s a total of 42 km and a lot of challenges have been dealt with along the way.
The dragline has made good time whilst it has been
walking. The purchase of extra cables and keeping
the substation on a float has allowed the dragline to
stay on schedule to reach the powerlines on the 7 th
June. En-route the dragline crews have dealt with
boggy conditions, public road crossings,
powerline de-energisations (to deadlines) and mine
traffic when walking along the haul roads. DL03
was parked up for almost 3 weeks on the Eastern
Creek haul road when components in the left cam
failed. The maintenance crews took this time to
also repair both the walking shoes and one of the
swing boxes.
At the time of writing, the dragline was walking to
the top of Ramp 10 at Eastern Creek and was only
a day or two away before commencement of
digging. With a new approach to blasting at Eastern
Creek, it is hoped that production figures will be
improved, compared to the last production in the
area (approx. 2006). We will find out soon.
Shovel 1 has also been relocated to Eastern Creek.
It travelled a little easier on the back of a Lamson
megalift float. After passing through the powerlines
on the 7 th June, it was only a couple of days before
it was digging prestrip material. Upon
commencement of digging at Eastern Creek it has
achieved good dig rates, which need to be
maintained to stay ahead of Dragline 3.
Credit should be given to all involved, including,
though not limited to, the Technical Services team,
the maintenance crews, the electrical crews, and the production operators involved in the relocations. It has been
a huge project getting these two machines to Eastern Creek and I am sure everyone will be happy when they are
finalised. Now that these large digging machines are in place, we need to maximise production for 2011 to have a
successful year.
