Glenden Pioneer
Published for Newlands Employees and the Glenden Community December 2011
2011 has been another year of many
achievements at NCA and in the Glenden.
Just recently we have completed another 42
Single Persons Quarters in Stuart Terrace with
another 48 to be completed early next year. We
have also purchased 32 rooms to be installed at
the minesite, growing to 200 next year with a
mess to cater for the exploration drill crews and
short term shutdowns.
This year we commenced a housing upgrade program which will
run over a number of years. Part of this program is to upgrade all
the upright stoves, planning to purchase a number this year and
start installation before the end of the year. We aim to have fan
forced ovens and separate cook tops in most houses next year.
We have also made a major contribution to the refurbishment of
Cottas Restaurant at the Town Club and hope that all Glenden
residents enjoy this great facility.
Our safety performance has again been impressive and most
operations will achieve the targeted reduction in injuries for the
year. This has been an excellent outcome and a continued effort
will be required to achieve the same next year.
It has been a tough year again for operations with another wet
start to the year and some difficulties in the underground. So far
this season the weather has been good to us, we hope to finish
the year in a good position.
Finally, after eight and a half years as General Manager of NCA, I
will be taking on a new role based in Mackay in the New Year. It is
with some regret that we are leaving our home and many friends
and family that we have in Glenden. However, I will still have a
keen interest in the progress of the mine and town. I have a great
management team and thank them all for making NCA the
successful business that it is today.
I would like to thank you all for your efforts throughout
the year and on behalf of Val and myself, I would like
to take this opportunity to wish all employees and
their families a safe and happy Christmas.
Christmas
Mayor’s Message
Christmas is upon us once again. A time to relax
and reflect upon those things which are most
important in our lives: our friends and our family. It
strikes me how fortunate we are to live where we
do, in one of the most beautiful regions of one of
the most beautiful countries. But beauty is just part
of it. There’s such a great sense of community
where we live. During my travels across the region,
I have met a great many people and the strength of
community spirit always amazes.
On behalf of myself and your Councillors, I would
like to thank everyone for their kindness and
support. This is a special time of the year and we
hope you get to spend it with those who are most
special to you. Travel safely and have a very merry
Christmas and a happy New Year.
Kim from the Glenden Pharmacy would
like to thank residents, the community
and Glenden Town Services for their
great support to both myself and the
Glenden Pharmacy.
Thank-you, KIM
Have a safe
and relaxing
Christmas!!!
The team from Town Services
would like to wish everyone a
safe and happy Christmas.
Thank you for your continued
support throughout the year
everyone in the New Year.
NEW DENTAL PRACTICE OPENS!
On Tuesday the 8 th November the new Glenden dental practice opened for business. The new dental practice is
owned and operated by resident dental practitioner Dr Sarah Rose of Roseandmayne Pty Ltd. Significant support
was provided by Newlands Coal Pty Ltd in the approval, design and project implementation stages with all
construction works completed by RD Services project services team. The fit-out of the dental equipment was
completed quickly by a team of specialist installation
technicians from Henry Schein, despite having
incurred several unplanned delays.
The practice is now taking bookings from local
residents and is expected to be very well patronised
and is considered a welcome addition to our growing
community.
Please join us in welcoming Dr. Sarah and her staff
into our community.
UPDATE - STUART TERRACE ACCOMMODATION COMPLEX
Stage 2 of the Stuart Terrace accommodation complex is now well under way with all civil works completed and
the first 6 rooms arriving on site around the 14 th November. The push will now be on to achieve a completion date
of the 30 th March 2012. Parents are reminded to ensure that children do not enter the demarcated areas at any
time, particularly over the Christmas and New Year period when we have limited supervision on site.
CHRISTMAS LIGHTS
It is important to buy Christmas lights the most appropriate for where they will be used. The following information is
provided for information purposes only;
Indoors If you will be using lights indoors only and protected from the weather, then it’s acceptable to buy lights
suitable “for indoor use only”. The marking “for indoor use only” will be on the Christmas light, usually on the plastic
label tag near the supply plug or on the transformer rating label if the lights are extra low voltage. It will also be
clearly marked on the box.
Outdoors If the lights are for outdoors or on verandas or where they can be affected by the weather, only buy
Christmas lights marked “suitable for outdoor use”. The marking will usually be on the plastic label tag or
transformer rating label and may have an “IP” rating (ie IPX3, IP23, IP44) – the higher the numbers the better the
weatherproof rating. Some types of Christmas lights suitable for outdoors require the transformer (“plug”) to be
located indoors and away from any effects of weather. Some may only be suitable for temporary use outdoors. If
you want to leave lights outside leading up to Christmas, consider solar powered lights.
Light safety around children If you think children may accidentally come into contact with Christmas light bulbs,
look for lights marked “safety extra low voltage”.
Purchasing safe Christmas lights Christmas lights require an Australian certificate of approval before they can
be sold in Queensland. Buy your lights from a reputable dealer who will know the electrical equipment safety
requirements for selling Christmas lights in Queensland.
What to look for When buying new Christmas light kits, look for an approval number (e.g. Q12345; V12345;
N12345; NSW12345;) or the regulatory compliance mark logo, which indicates compliance with Australian
Standards. These marks must be on the Christmas lights and are normally found on a plastic tag near the
supply plug, or on the transformer body if it is an extra low voltage type. The markings may also be
printed on the packaging. Only buy lights that have an approval mark.
For more information see marking of prescribed electrical equipment (http://www.justice.qld.gov.au).
Caution! Be particularly cautious if you have purchased your Christmas lights on-line or from overseas as
they may not comply with the relevant safety standards.
Unlocking of Accommodation (including after hours)
Should you inadvertently lock your keys inside your house, flat or SPQ please call Morris Corporation (at the
cafeteria) on 4958 9229 and the duty manager will arrange to unlock. The unlocking of accommodation should not
be referred to our maintenance contractor, RD Services.

Newlands Coal
Extension Project
Have a Say about the Newlands Coal Extension Project?
Xstrata Coal has submitted three mining lease applications for the
proposed Newlands Coal Extension Project. The proposed extensions to
Eastern Creek Open Cut and Northern Underground mines will see the
operation and equipment move into these areas as coal reserves in
other parts of Newlands Coal mines are depleted. This extension will
increase the life of the Newlands Coal operations, continuing to provide
vital employment and economic opportunities for local communities.
As part of the approvals process, an environmental impact statement
(EIS) is being prepared, with the next step to conduct a social impact
assessment.
This assessment will assist the project team to understand local and
regional settings which may be affected by the project. To gain this
understanding, baseline information from the local and regional
community has to be gathered, collated and analysed.
A survey / information about the Newlands Coal Extension Project will
be distributed to all households, properties and businesses in Glenden.
Public displays will also be held at the Glenden Library, Town Square
and at the Morris Cafeteria beginning next week from 5th December.
To have your say; you are invited to attend a display and complete the
survey; or complete and return the survey mailed to your home or
business; or use the electronic survey available through this link:
https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/XstrataCoalSIAsurvey
Keep Safe When Christmas
Shopping Online
Queensland Country Credit Union is urging
Queensland consumers to keep safe when
Christmas shopping online this festive season.
“Christmas shopping online is easy to do and
a great convenience,” said CEO Aileen Cull.
“But it’s important to remember to take steps
to ensure you are protecting your personal
information, and not allowing yourself to be
vulnerable to fraud or online criminals. When
you shop online, make sure you are smart
about the whole purchasing process: know
who you are dealing with, what you are
buying, be confident you will get what you
have paid for, and ensure that your account
and credit card details are being dealt with
safely,” she explained.
Most shoppers know the warning signs to look
for when buying something in a shop - and the
same applies to shopping online. Be wary if:
• The website looks suspicious or
unprofessional;
• The website is offering bargains which
look too good to be true; or
• If you are not confident about the use of
your information or that you will get what
you pay for.
Remember, when making a payment online:
• Only pay via a secure web page (one that
has a valid digital certificate) - look for the
https at the beginning of the address bar
and a locked padlock in the browser;
• Use a secure payment method such as
PayPal, BPAY or your credit card (avoid
money transfers and direct debit, as these
can be open to abuse);
• Never send your bank or credit card
details via email - only via a secure web
page; and
• Always print and keep a copy of the
transaction.
For more information, hints and tips on internet
safety go to www.staysmartonline.gov.au - an
and the Digital Economy.
Death and taxes – the two certainties in life.
Another thing we can be sure of is that we’ll have bills to pay.
With the recent federal government announcement regarding
carbon tax and Christmas making a dent in our wallets,
people are even more conscious about the increasing costs of
goods and services.
Few things come for free, however, one tool you can access
to help manage your finances are budgeting calculators. Most
Credit Unions and Banks offer these tools on their websites.
All you need to do is itemise your bills into monthly amounts.
This might include regular expenses as well as those less
frequent bills.
Once you have calculated your total expenses, you can
compare your total income and total budgeted expenses for
each month and make relevant adjustments.
The next step is making sure you pay each of these bills on
time and within budget. At Queensland Country, a Billpaying
Account is a great way to manage all of your bills. We help
you with the whole process, from your budget right through to
paying your bills. This account allows your bills to be spread
out across 12 months, so you don’t have to stress about
having enough money or paying your bills on time, we’ll
handle that for you.
Contact Hayley at Queensland Country to see what she can
do to help you manage your money better. Ph: 4958 9533

With our bowls green out of action due to renovations, we have been invited over to play in a charity day in
Moranbah on Sunday 4 th December. Roger has kindly made the club bus available, so the first ones in can grab a
lift over. We will leave between 7.15am – 7.30am. There are 3 games – entry fee is what ever the lunch price
is! If you wish, you can purchase raffle tickets and tickets in the Calcutta. It is a draw for partners, so it is a good
way to mix with our friends from Moranbah Bowls. Put your name on the board down at the club if you want to go
on the bus, OR call me to let me know you are going. Open to all. Thank-you.
Christmas in Australia is different to what you know,
We don't see any reindeer and for sure there is no snow,
No steaming Christmas pudding, or eggnog by the fire,
Too much of that hot stuff, makes us all perspire.
The sun is brightly shining. The sky is blue and bright,
If it doesn’t rain, the day should be just right,
The steaks are cooking nicely, the snags are lined up neat,
We’re heading to the Fair soon, a friend or two we’ll meet.
The temp is in the 40s, we’ll cool down with a beer,
There's coldies in the esky, dinners drawing near,
Who needs the snow and iced up roads, Santa and his sleigh?
We'll have a red hot Christmas, that's the Aussie way.
It’s that special time of year again!
Come along, dress up and enjoy the festivities:
Road repairs to commence once funding approved
Glenden Library held a Morning Tea and Story Time
session to celebrate Children’s Week on Wednesday
26 October. Our Story Teller for the morning was
Hayley Titley-Murphy and all children and parents
attending had a wonderful time with singing, dancing,
stories, nursery rhymes and importantly with a mass
of balloons. With over forty attendees and a picnic in
the children’s room - there was a lot of chatting,
laughing, eating and plenty of happy children.
This week, Isaac Regional Council welcomed the Queensland Reconstruction Authority (QRA) to inspect the
region’s roads. Covering a vast area in a short amount of time, the QRA and Council Officers were able to make an
assessment of the maintenance work required. Council is currently waiting for QRA funding to be approved before
work can commence on repairing these roads.
Isaac Mayor Cedric Marshall said Council was working hard to shorten the timeframe between
now and when funding is approved. ‘Welcoming the QRA to the region was a means for State
government to see first hand the repairs which must still be carried out,’ he said. ‘The last wet
season caused extensive damage, and though we made sure all emergent works, those which
could be considered life-threatening, were repaired quickly, we need funding for all other
repairs. ‘Council has been proactive during this time and assessed all 3000 kilometres of our
region’s roads for flood damage and we are now just waiting for funding and approval from
State Government.
‘For the moment, we ask residents to be understanding of the situation and to drive carefully
and to prevailing conditions.’
