Hi, my name is Katheleen Mulroy and I am the Youth Addictions Counsellor with in the Evergreen School Division. I work in the three Evergreen High Schools and I am in ACI on Tuesdays during the school year and at the Gimli Community AFM office (642-5162) during the summer. AFM provides school based services in over 60 schools across the province of Manitoba. As a part of this service, Youth Addictions Counsellors like myself, provide prevention, education, assessment and counselling services to youth and their families. Offering these services in the school environment makes it easier for youth to access them and provides an opportunity for early intervention and prevention. This is an exciting and highly successful initiative that I am proud to be a part of. People use alcohol or other drugs for many different reasons. When they are high, they feel relaxed, confident and happy, and they don’t have to worry about problems. At least, that’s how life seems at the time. But if you use alcohol or drugs you know sometimes things are different. Asking yourself the following questions might give you some clues about how alcohol or other drugs may be affecting you. Have you ever had arguments with your parents/ guardians about drug or alcohol use? Have you ever lied to friends or family to cover up your use? Has your relationship with your friends or family changed because of your drug/alcohol use? Have you ever felt badly because of something you said or did while under the influence? Do you feel that people do not trust you anymore? Have you stolen money, alcohol or other things from family or friends? Do you have trouble concentrating or notice that your memory isn’t as good? Are you involved in illegal activity? Have your grades dropped? Have you dropped activities which were once important to you? Do you use alcohol or drugs to feel better? Or even normal? Are old friends avoiding you? Do you prefer a using crowd? Have you driven a car under the influence of alcohol and or other drugs? Have you ever thought about cutting down or quitting? If you answered “yes” to any of these and are concerned about your use of alcohol or drugs, or as a parent you are concerned,You may want to talk to an AFM counsellor for help
Congratulations to the Concert Choir and Vocal Ensemble for their inspiring performances at the Evergreen Festival of the Arts! The Concert Choir was awarded the Noventis Credit Union Trophy for Best Performance in Choral – Open as well as a recommendation to the National Class. Please take note of the following upcoming performance: On June 12 th the Vocal Ensemble will be performing at the Manitoba Lotteries 55+ Games at the Arborg Hall. We look forward to seeing you at this performance! France Trip During spring break 15 grade 10-12 students from the French program, along with Mrs. Fridfinnson and Mrs. Perry, went to Europe. Despite a rough start, the trip was incredible. We went to Paris first, where we went to the top of the iconic Eiffel Tower. We also visited the Louvre, which is the most famous museum in the world. It holds masterpieces such as the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo. We then took a six hour ride to the French Riviera on the TGV, which is a high-speed train. The Riviera was gorgeous. After the Riviera we headed off to Pisa, where we saw the Leaning Tower of Pisa. After Pisa we went to Florence, then spent a day in Rome, where we saw the Colosseum and the Trevi Fountain. We also visited Vatican City, where we awed at the incredible painted rooms and the Sistene Chapel. Since we missed the first day of our trip, we got to go on the extension, which included Pompeii and the island of Capri. The Arborg group was joined by the Gimli group, as well as a group from Boise, Idaho. It was definitely a trip that we will never forget! The next French trip will be in three years (2014-2015), and grade 10-12 French students will have the opportunity to go. Submitted by Madison Senkow
