The theme for this year’s gr. 11 ELA at ACI is heroism and facing adversity.<br />

The students have read various forms of literature and extracted the themes from<br />

several works (The Hunger Games, 1984, independent novels, short s<strong>to</strong>ries,<br />

music/presentations, and poetry), and have had several <strong>opportunities</strong> <strong>to</strong> exercise<br />

their writing skills and abilities. One of these projects was <strong>to</strong> create their own<br />

superhero! Students were asked <strong>to</strong> brains<strong>to</strong>rm the characteristics of a<br />

superhero, and then compare these traits <strong>to</strong> what they personally deemed <strong>to</strong> be<br />

heroic traits.<br />

Every Monday for five weeks the students were given the title <strong>to</strong> a s<strong>to</strong>ry, and<br />

had <strong>to</strong> write the epic saga, featuring their own created superhero in action of<br />

course! Titles included, “The Great Escape…,” “It’s Not Easy Being a Superhero,”<br />

and “My Greatest Weakness.” Once the s<strong>to</strong>ries were completed, students put their<br />

editing skills <strong>to</strong> work and polished up their final drafts. They also <strong>to</strong>ok their<br />

favourite s<strong>to</strong>ry and, using Comic Life software on the school computers, made<br />

their own comic books!<br />

Not only did their superhero<br />

creations come <strong>to</strong> life on<br />

print, but students also<br />

completed the final step of<br />

the project – biographical<br />

posters! These posters<br />

(featured below) are<br />

currently on display in the<br />

classroom. They are all very<br />

unique, representing multiple<br />

interpretations of heroism.<br />

Next door, in Mr. Nickerson’s room, we spent a lot of<br />

the month of May working on the MultiGenre Project.<br />

Each student chose a <strong>to</strong>pic that related <strong>to</strong> the<br />

theme of heroism and facing adversity. Some people<br />

focused on their own heroes, while others focused<br />

on situations where people face adversity. Each<br />

<strong>to</strong>pic was researched, and that research was the<br />

basis for a variety of writing tasks that we did. All<br />

of these different writing pieces were collected <strong>to</strong><br />

tell the “s<strong>to</strong>ry” of the research in a different way<br />

than the boring old research essay we’re used <strong>to</strong>.<br />

The pieces were collected, placed in an interesting<br />

package, and then handed in.<br />

The hand in basket was interesting on the due date,<br />

filled with mo<strong>to</strong>rcycle helmets, comic books and cd<br />

cases
