2012 FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK ~ MRS. PERRY JUNE NEWSLETTER VOCAL JAZZ & BAND REPORT ~ CIARA STANOWSKI The month of February has been very busy in vocal jazz and band. The vocal and instrumental jazz groups are going to be taking a trip to the Brandon Jazz Festival on March 17 th -18 th to observe performances and clinics that will be taking place. In vocal jazz we have just begun learning new songs to perform at the yearend concert. We have taken on some very challenging material that we think will be very enjoyable when it’s completed. Band has been especially busy preparing for the Optimist Festival in Winnipeg on February 22, 2012. The pieces we performed were Salvation is Created and Battle Pavane. We performed at the Convention Centre, were adjudicated by various different musicians and were given tips for improvement. After the Festival we went from a group dinner at Boston Pizza. The band is now working on the pieces that will be performed at the yearend concert on May 31 st in the Arborg Hall. The beginner Band Festival is being held on May 14 th . We will also be participating in a performance workshop with the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra on March 23 rd Students performing at the Optimist Festival in Winnipeg on Wednesday February 22 . nd As the weather gets nicer and nicer the buzz of summer jobs, exams, graduation and vacation are filling the halls. Where has the time gone? It feels like it was just Christmas and now we are embarking on the end of the year. For parents of graduates I am sure it feels like you were just at the kindergarten graduation and now the real graduation is upon us. Enjoy every day with your children as they are growing up so quickly and will be moving out and onto new lives shortly. Welcome and thank you to Mr. Jerry Ramnath for joining the ACI staff to teach Physics 12, Essential Math 10 & 11. It is a real treat to work with Mr. Ramnath. His first year at ACI was when I was in grade 10. He still seems as spunky and full of fun as he did way back. Hope you enjoy your time at ACI. We also welcome Ms. Shauna . Theriault as an Educational Assistant. She comes to ACI with lots of experience and has worked with several students in the past at AEMS. Many students were excited to see her here and her transition was made easier. We hope she enjoys her time here. It is with heavy hearts that we need to announce that Ms. Katie Gullett will be leaving ACI and teaching at RCI. Our loss will definitely be their gain. We wish Ms. Gullett a good year at RCI and some students may continue under her instruction if they select to take courses at RCI. She will be missed. This coming year the school day will be structured into a 5 period day instead of a 4 period day. Classes will be 60 minutes long instead of 80 minutes. To meet the many outcomes of Math and ELA curriculum most students in grades 9 & 10 will take Math and ELA twice throughout the year. It is our goal that the students not be short changed in these areas and that all skills are developed. If you have any questions please attend the parent information night on Wednesday, June 6, 2012. Course registration forms have been handed out and need to be returned by Friday, June 8, 2012. ACI and RCI are continuing with our Joint Campus initiative to offer courses to students from each school. It is our plan to continue increasing the opportunities for students to take courses at the partner school. The joint campus initiative is working well. We have had a few glitches and growing pains but when we reflect on the first year of this program we feel that it has been a good start. Check the registration forms carefully and make choices that best reflect your learning and educational goals and plans. The success rate is astronomical, unlike other high schools we have no terms of ‘band geek’ or ‘singer dork,’ On which April of 11 that are in Choir, or any other musical portion, are considered ‘cool’. If you were to walk in the choir room at Riverton, you’d see a room full of young people who are generally interested in music of all kinds. Choir students from our division have set a good light upon them, after all of their performances have been raved for weeks and people flock the performances. There are three songs that choir kids are currently reviewing and singing, those of which are ‘Shosholoza’ an African folk song, ‘Hosanna NkosiPhezulu’ another African song, and ‘Things that Never Die’ a beautiful piece from the words of author Charles Dickens. All three songs are sophisticated and cultural. We will be performing in the Evergreen Festival of the Arts in late April/early May. th students and staff at ACI wore pink to recognize the need to stop bullying. On May 17 th the grade 10 ELA class presented to the entire school on Anti-homophobia day and once again encouraged students and staff to wear pink and reinforce the need to stop bullying. It was very encouraging to see the large number of students and staff members participate in these events. On Friday, May 25 th all high school students in the division got together in Gimli to experience an Interschool Day. Everyone came back with a positive buzz in spite of the cold, rainy weather. The students who participated reported that the day was excellent and even better than they expected. Congratulations to the planning committee which included Ben Airey, Bailey Sigvaldason and Monica Dueck from ACI. These students are part of the Evergreen School Division Student Council who planned and carried out the Wellness Day. Congratulations.
There are only 3 weeks of classes left before exams. Everyone has work that needs to be done. On Friday, June 8 th students at ACI will take part in a Safe Teen workshop. This workshop was held here 6 years ago and we felt that it was time to have students experience the message and information again. Students were very impressed with the presentations last time and I expect the same positive response again. The final Band/Choir Concert will take place on Thursday, May 31st at the Arborg Community Hall at 7:00 pm. Everyone is invited to come and see the students perform. It has been an amazing three years of the music program and the students continue to grow and wow us. The Graduation Ceremony will take place on Saturday, June 23 rd at 4:00 pm. The community is invited to take part in the ceremony. The dinner and dance is for invited guests only. On Thursday, June 14 th in the afternoon ACI will host the annual Academic and Sport Award presentations in the afternoon. At this time we will also feature the Internship and Apprenticeship Sponsorship presentations and are inviting parents to attend. A lot of work goes into planning this event. We will be inviting the businesses who have taken on Interns and Apprenticeships to be part of the ceremony. Please mark your calendar June 14 th at 1:00 pm. It is very disturbing to see the recent vandalism that has taken place over the last few weeks. The parking lot partitions have been driven into and broken. A Graduation Composite picture from 1989 has been forcefully removed from the wall and taken. The photo is a class memory and it is so disappointing. These acts reflect negatively on the students of ACI. If you have any information please let the office know so that the photo can be retrieved. Tips can be anonymous. An art sculpture is also missing and needs to be returned so that it can be a part of the art show. A few individuals are representing the majority of positive ACI students negatively. Students and parents are reminded that exams will be upon us in no time. The exam schedule is posted below. Please post it in a visible spot for all to remember. Remind your child/ren to prepare for exams, complete all course work and finish the year strong and positively.
