From early in the life of the BBC, the Corporation’s senior management operated a system of unofficial censorship, whereby before records could be played on the air, they had to be approved for broadcast by the Dance Music Policy Committee, and their decision endorsed by the Head of Light Entertainment. Records were banned from broadcast for a variety of reasons - risque innuendo, religious references, mention of commercial brands, over-sentimentality, bad taste, and (a particular obsession of the BBC’s Director of Music in the 1940s, Sir Arthur Bliss) the fact that a tune was borrowed from classical works. As a result, a large number of records, of widely disparate style and content, found themselves with ‘Not to be broadcast’ stickers on them. This collection brings together 75 recordings which fell foul of the BBC’s red pencil up to the year 1957. It has often been reported that a record has been banned by the BBC but it was not until the release of the groundbreaking set, ‘This Record Is Not To Be Broadcast’, in 2008 that actual proof was given. The BBC never wanted to publicise its decisions, but using the BBC’s files, broadcaster Spencer Leigh compiled a 3CD set which showed not only what had been banned but also why the BBC found the tracks objectionable. ‘This Record Is Not To Be Broadcast’ was the subject of many media features and received excellent reviews, both from within the BBC and outside it! Now comes the second volume, another 50 more tracks, all banned by the BBC. The collection includes songs about drugs (Fats Waller’s Reefer Man), political incorrectness (Lonnie Donegan’s Nobody Loves Like An Irishman), advertising (Cliff Richard’s High Class Baby and the Playmates’ Beep Beep), and ‘mutilation of the classics’ (such as Perry Como’s Moonlight Love, which took it’s melody from Debussy). The shock horror-rock of John Zacherle’s Dinner With Drac was considered despicable, but even Billy Fury’s plaintive My Christmas Prayer fell foul of the censors. Part of the fun is listening without reading the booklet and trying to guess why the tracks were banned. In 1959, the Kingston Trio’s Worried Man was banned because the BBC didn’t like the word ‘closet’ being used for ‘cupboard’. Many of the tracks are appearing on CD for the first time.
