Banks) The women of the Borscht Belt have frequently been called the mothers of the sexual revolution. With their
roots in ‘30s comedians such as Fanny Brice, these ladies made their homes in the saloons of New York, Vegas and
of course the Catskills. Their comedy routines exposed the subject of sex from a female perspective. Their material
was considered very advanced for its day and considered extremely raunchy. Albums by Rusty Warren and Totie
Fields were tucked away by many parents so their children could not listen to them. These women were the first comedians
to openly discuss sex at a time when sex was just not discussed publicly. Most lost popularity as the sexual
revolution of the late ‘60s started to take hold and the topic was no longer taboo. [Item Code: 73172 CD: $12.00]
1156015 GIL EVANS ORCHESTRA OUT OF THE COOL La Nevada • Where Flamingos Fly • Bilbao Song
• Stratusphunk • Sunken Treasure • Sister Sadie (Personnel: Elvin Jones, Charlie Persip, Ron Carter, Ray Crawford,
Ray Beckinstein, Budd Johnson, Eddie Caine, Jimmy Knepper, Keg Johnson, Tony Studd, Johnny Coles, Phil Sunkel,
Bill Barber, Bob Tricarico) Gil Evans had learned much from Miles Davis about improvisation, instinct, and space.
Evans orchestrates less here, instead concentrating on the rhythm section built around Elvin Jones, Charlie Persip,
bassist Ron Carter, and guitarist Ray Crawford. The maestro in the piano chair also assembled a crack horn section
for this date, with Ray Beckinstein, Budd Johnson, and Eddie Caine on saxophones, trombonists Jimmy Knepper, Keg
Johnson, and bass trombonist Tony Studd, with Johnny Coles and Phil Sunkel on trumpet, Bill Barber on tuba, and
Bob Tricarico on flute, bassoon, and piccolo. The music here is of a wondrous variety, bookended by two stellar
Evans compositions in “La Nevada,” and “Sunken Treasure.” [Item Code: 71083 CD: $13.00]
Leonard King Jr., Vincent Chandler, Brandon ross, more) [2011] At the Crossroads, saxophonist James Carter’s
third disc for the Emarcy, is the first for the label with his Organ Trio, which has been together since 2004. Produced
by Michael Cuscuna, it’s an indelible portrait of Detroit’s historic jazz scene, envisioned in the present while looking
ahead. All trio members - Carter, organist Gerard Gibbs, and drummer Leonard King, Jr. - either reside or come from
there. This disc also showcases Carter’s development from his earliest days shedding in the Motor City to his current
status as a jazz virtuoso. [Item Code: 72779 CD: $19.00]
122 DANNY D’IMPERIO ALCOHOL The Song Is You • It’s Love • Room 608 • Make It Good • Ultimate
Rejection • Portrait Of Stephanie • Blue Bird • It’s Magic • Blue On Blue • Ultimate Rejection (Personnel: Greg
Gisbert, Andy Gravish, Chris Persad, John Mosca, Early Anderson, Gary Pribek, Hod O’Brien, Steve Brown, more)
[1991/1998] This latest Danny D’Imperio CD is a tribute to Danny’s avocation. As a member of a multitude of big
bands, Danny traveled for years on the bus in the juicer section. This had a big impact. He wants that known. The
music here has no special relation to this. It comes from several recordings that were made in the mid 1990s. This is
a fine CD with great playing by some of New York’s finest journeymen of that period (Village Vanguard/Thad Jones-
Mel Lewis Big Band, Buddy Rich Ghost Band). Great charts and solos. [Item Code: 72672 CD: $17.00]
