While the drummer’s choice of musicians on these sessions, including Clark Terry, Charlie Mariano, Gabor Szabo, and Jimmy Cheatham is impeccable, it’s the addition of Latin percussionists Willie Bobo and Victor Pantoja that make these recordings stand out. These albums feature Hubbard in his prime. For The Artistry of Freddie Hubbard, he was joined by trombonist Curtis Fuller along with a stellar rhythm section of pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist Art Davis, and drummer Louis Hayes. Tackling such standards as “Caravan” as well as few Hubbard originals, the album plays like a straight-ahead jam session with the young players pushing the modern jazz tenets of blues, swing, and bop to the edge. A consummate hard bopper, Mitchell experimented with soul and funk-jazz as the ‘70s wore on and these albums are no exception. Funky but lyrical, muscular yet still swinging with a modern jazz intensity, these albums feature Mitchell playing against small as well as large ensembles, including orchestral strings on ‘African Violet’. Reflecting the somewhat commercial approach to many jazz productions of the time with electric guitars and synthesizers in the mix, they are nonetheless worthy, hard to find recordings and it’s great to have them together on one disc. The former album is regarded as one of Mingus’ masterpieces for its use of colors, tonalities, expansive harmonies, and the juxtaposition of numerous aspects of the jazz tradition - from Ellingtonian swing to hard bop, to West Coast and new-thing jazz - employing a vocal chorus, and even Latin and flamenco flourishes in a single conceptual work played by an 11-piece orchestra. The latter album here, Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus, also featured an 11-piece orchestra with a slight variation in personnel: this group featured both Jaki Byard and Eric Dolphy. Unfortunately, both pianists are featured mainly on harpsichord, which tends to dominate the compositions. Ostly, The County Tax Assessor • Unfolding In (On Itself) (Collective Personnel: Larry Knechtel, Mike Wofford, Pete Robinson, Mike Deasy, Bobby Bruce, Brian Garofalo, Max Bennett, Bob Morin, John Guerin, Dave Grusin, More) [1970- 1972] A consummate jazz and session guitarist in the 1950s and ‘60s, Howard Roberts was a bandleader on quite a few of his own sessions, as well, including two very odd albums from Impulse <strong>Records</strong>, 1971’s ‘Antelope Freeway’ and 1975’s ‘Equinox Express Elevator’, both of which are included in their entirety here. This was Roberts on a psychedelic highway, merging everything into a Firesign Theatre-like montage of street noise, acoustic improvisations, stoner jokes, intermittent vocals, and electric guitar workouts that simply defies categorization. ‘Antelope Freeway’ and ‘Equinox Express Elevator’ are easily two of the strangest albums Impulse ever released, and pairing them like this on a single disc is both genius and insane - listening to both of these in one sitting might seriously upset a few apple carts in the mind. Both sets are straight-ahead dates with Now! finding Stitt switching from alto to tenor saxophone, breaking out of his Charlie Parker imitator phase. On Now! Stitt is the only reed in the band which consists of Osie Johnson, Hank Jones, and Al Lucas. Salt & Pepper, the better of the two sessions, has Stitt teaming up with Ellington alumni Paul Gonsalves for a heated rendition of Perdido and a classic style battle of the tenors on the title track. Jones and Johnson also appear on this date with Milt Hinton replacing Al Lucas. Generally considered one of Terry’s best ‘60s outings, ‘The Happy Horns of Clark Terry’ is a jaunty, swinging affair that finds Terry joined by such names as saxophonists Phil Woods and Ben Webster, bassist Milt Hinton, and others. Featuring a lively take on Duke Ellington’s ‘Rockin’ in Rhythm,’ Bix Beiderbecke’s ‘In a Mist,’ and even an Ellington medley, the album is a must-hear for Terry fanatics. Interestingly, It’s What’s Happenin’ features Terry playing his horns through the then-innovative electronic hookup the Selmer Varitone attachment. Here we get a take on his classic vocal and trumpet tune ‘Mumbles’ called ‘Electric Mumbles’ as well as a the bluesy ‘Take Me Back to Elkhart’ and more. [Item Code: 73185 CD: $18.00] 80958 MICHAEL WHITE SPIRIT DANCE - PNEUMA Spirit Dance- Spirit Dance • The Tenth Pyramid • John Coltrane Was Here • Ballad For Mother Frankie White • Samba • Unlocking The Twelfth House • Praise Innocence • Pneuma Part 1 • Pneuma Part 2 • Pneuma Part 3 • Pneuma Part 4 • Pneuma Part 5 • Ebony Plaza • Journey Of The Black Star • The Blessing Song (Collective Personnel: Ed Kelly, Baba Omson, Makeda King, Wanika King, Kenneth Nash, Jean Skinner, Faye Kelly, Joyce Walker, Leola Sharp) [1971/1972] Spirit Dance and Pneuma were jazz violinist Michael White’s first two albums as a leader. They’d been available previously only as Japanese imports. Before recording Spirit Dance in 1971, White had worked with Pharoah Sanders on Thembi, and with Alice Coltrane when she overdubbed the strings on John Coltrane’s infamous Infinity album. With pianist Ed Kelly, bassist Ray Drummond, percussionist Baba Omson, and Makeda & Wanika King on vocals, these seven original compositions offer White’s prodigious soloing technique inside their post-Coltrane modalism. They differ, however, in that the rhythms on these tunes are all circular, and quite African in influence in that they return to a specific center. Kelly’s piano, the chanted/sung vocals, and White’s own violin serve the rhythm, rather than the other way around. Pneuma is very different, but no less compelling. Using almost the same band (Nash replaces Omson on percussion) and four vocalists, the set’s first five tracks are a suite that took up all of the original LP’s first side. The playing is, with the exception of “Pneuma IV,” very free and outside. In total, this two-fer makes complete sense and is a perfect pairing: it presents a true representation of White’s widespectrum vision, and his criminally overlooked talent. Another reason to consider this is the sound; these are beautifully remastered recordings. [Item Code: 73186 CD: $18.00] 103978 GEORGE SHEARING CARMEN MCRAE TWO FOR THE ROAD I Don’t Stand A Ghost Of A Chance • You’re All I Need • Gentleman Friend • More Than You Know • Cloudy Morning • Too Late Now • If I Should Lose You • Ghost Of Yesterday • What Is There To Say • Two For The Road (With Carmen McRae) [1980] The only recorded meeting between George Shearing and Carmen McRae took place in 1980 for Concord, and it’s a shame there wasn’t a follow-up date. Although the pianist’s backing of singers on recordings is relatively infrequent, he always provides them with richly textured and inspired accompaniment. McRae is in great voice on this date. Although her voice had deepened over the years, she still retained the ability to bring out the best in songs with her emotional and dramatic interpretations. Most of the works on this CD are gems from the Great American Songbook, including a jaunty take of ‘Gentleman Friend,’ which has some lively scatting, and the moving ballad ‘If I Should Lose You.’ The only reservation about the CD reissue is the removal of the color cover photo of the two musicans in the studio, which is replaced by a very dull cover with only bland lettering - hardly an imaginative piece of packaging.
