Gabor Szabo, Jimmy Cheatham, Willie Bobo, Victor Pantoja) [1965/1966] This set combines two Chico Hamilton
LPs from Impulse Records, ‘El Chico’ and ‘Further Adventure of El Chico’. The 18 tracks include pleasant arrangements
of standards and pop songs of the era. While the drummer’s choice of musicians on these sessions, including
Clark Terry, Charlie Mariano, Gabor Szabo, and Jimmy Cheatham is impeccable, it’s the addition of Latin percussionists
Willie Bobo and Victor Pantoja that make these recordings stand out. [Item Code: 73176 CD: $18.00]
what is involved musically on this album is a result of the ‘almost full circle’ of music that has been John Handy’s
good fortune to have experienced. [Item Code: 73177 CD: $18.00]
Jones) [1962-1963] This two-fer features 1962’s The Artistry of Freddie Hubbard and 1963’s The Body and the
Soul. These albums feature Hubbard in his prime. For The Artistry of Freddie Hubbard, he was joined by trombonist
Curtis Fuller along with a stellar rhythm section of pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist Art Davis, and drummer Louis
Hayes. Tackling such standards as “Caravan” as well as few Hubbard originals, the album plays like a straight-ahead
jam session with the young players pushing the modern jazz tenets of blues, swing, and bop to the edge. [Item
A Day At The Mint • Love Has Made Me A Dreamer • Evergreen • 30 Degrees To The Wind • Funkthesizer (Collective
Personnel: Herman Riley, Harold Land, Sonny Burke, Cedar Walton, Bobby Lyle, more) [1977•1978] This
two-fer combines a pair of trumpeter Blue Mitchell’s late-career albums for the Impulse! label: 1977’s ‘African Violet’
and ‘Summer Soft’. A consummate hard bopper, Mitchell experimented with soul and funk-jazz as the ‘70s wore on
and these albums are no exception. Funky but lyrical, muscular yet still swinging with a modern jazz intensity, these
albums feature Mitchell playing against small as well as large ensembles, including orchestral strings on ‘African
Violet’. Reflecting the somewhat commercial approach to many jazz productions of the time with electric guitars and
synthesizers in the mix, they are nonetheless worthy, hard to find recordings and it’s great to have them together on
one disc. [Item Code: 73181 CD: $18.00]
Quentin Jackson, Don Butterfield, Charlie Mariano, Dick Hafer, Jerome Richardson, Jaki Byard, Jay Berliner, Dannie
the Sinner Lady’ was recorded on January 20, 1963, the recording that ended up as ‘Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus’
was begun that very day. The former album is regarded as one of Mingus’ masterpieces for its use of colors, tonalities,
expansive harmonies, and the juxtaposition of numerous aspects of the jazz tradition - from Ellingtonian swing
to hard bop, to West Coast and new-thing jazz - employing a vocal chorus, and even Latin and flamenco flourishes
in a single conceptual work played by an 11-piece orchestra. The latter album here, Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus,
also featured an 11-piece orchestra with a slight variation in personnel: this group featured both Jaki Byard and Eric
Dolphy. [Item Code: 73180 CD: $18.00]
Ron Carter, George Duvivier, Ed Shaughnessy, Grady Tate, Roger Kellaway, Jimmy Gordon) [1966/1968] This Impulse
two-fer revives a pair of LPs by arranger, composer, and saxophonist Oliver Nelson, ‘Happenings’ and ‘Soulful
Brass’, released in 1966 and 1968, respectively. ‘Happenings’ features pianist Hank Jones while ‘Soulful Brass’ was
co-led with comedian/pianist Steve Allen. Unfortunately, both pianists are featured mainly on harpsichord, which
tends to dominate the compositions. [Item Code: 73182 CD: $18.00]
