UWPIAA bestows two special<br />
alumni recognition awards:<br />
The James E. MacLennan Everyday<br />
Hero Award and the J. Blanton Belk<br />
Outstanding Alumnus/Alumna<br />
Award. Now is the time for you to<br />
nominate a deserving alum for one<br />
of these special honors.<br />
The James E. MacLennan<br />
Everyday Hero Award recognizes<br />
alumni who have best carried on the<br />
ideals and leadership training of<br />
UWP after they have left the<br />
program. The award is named in<br />
honor of James MacLennan, chief<br />
operating officer, financial officer<br />
and support person for UWP when<br />
it was in its infancy. Up to six alumni<br />

are recognized as Everyday Heroes at<br />
each reunion. The six are selected<br />
from all nominations for that<br />
reunion year — there is no requirement<br />
to recognize one alum from<br />
each era group.<br />
The J. Blanton Belk Outstanding<br />
Alumnus Award is given each year to<br />
recognize one individual who, in<br />
carrying forward the ideals of UWP,<br />
has made an exceptional contribution<br />
to humankind. This award, named in<br />
honor of UWP’s founder, is chosen<br />
from among all alumni, including<br />
previous Everyday Heroes.<br />

In In Memoriam<br />
Memoriam<br />
Gavin McLaren (85B) died<br />
on December 5, 2002, at the age<br />
of 35 after a short battle with<br />
cancer. He played trumpet in<br />
85B. Gavin grew up in<br />
Saskatchewan, Canada, and<br />
completed his degree in computer<br />
engineering after traveling<br />
with UWP. He worked as a<br />
software developer in<br />
Vancouver, Canada, where he<br />
lived with his wife Nicola<br />
(Horner) (85B) and their two<br />
children Shannon (4) and Ian<br />
(1). Gavin’s love of music<br />
continued to fill his life, and he<br />
and Nicola treasure the friendships<br />
and support of their<br />
castmates.<br />
