DESIGN PROCESS A46 209 ARCH<br />
Open to Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g and Arts & Sciences students at all levels. <strong>St</strong>udio course will engage students <strong>in</strong><br />
the process of design with an emphasis on creative th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g. Course content relates directly to the<br />
<strong>in</strong>terests of eng<strong>in</strong>eers and all liberal arts students who wish to problem solve about shap<strong>in</strong>g the texture<br />
and quality of the built world. A series of hands-on projects <strong>in</strong>troduce students to design concepts as<br />
they apply to site (gardens and other outdoor places), to humanistic place mak<strong>in</strong>g (personal and small<br />
public spaces), to structure & materials (<strong>in</strong>tuitive exploration of structural pr<strong>in</strong>ciples though model<br />
build<strong>in</strong>g), to environmental issues (effects of climate, light, topography, context and sensible use of<br />
natural resources). No technical knowledge or special draw<strong>in</strong>g skills are required. 3 units.<br />

Non-<strong>architecture</strong> students must receive permission of the Associate Dean of the <strong>School</strong> of Architecture.<br />

SERVICE LEARNING COURSE: ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES A46 275 ARCH<br />
This service learn<strong>in</strong>g experience allows <strong>Wash<strong>in</strong>gton</strong> <strong>University</strong> students to br<strong>in</strong>g their knowledge and<br />
creativity about the many subjects they are study<strong>in</strong>g to students at the Compton-Drew Middle <strong>School</strong>,<br />
adjacent to the Science Center, <strong>in</strong> the City of <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Louis</strong>. This course is for arts and sciences students<br />
of differ<strong>in</strong>g majors & m<strong>in</strong>ors, bus<strong>in</strong>ess, <strong>architecture</strong> & art students, and eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g students from<br />
all eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g departments. The first third of the semester students will: 1) beg<strong>in</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
creative process of lateral th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g (synthesiz<strong>in</strong>g many variables, work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> cycles); 2) work with a<br />
team-mate to experiment with the design of 2-D & 3-D hands-on problem-solv<strong>in</strong>g workshops about<br />
excit<strong>in</strong>g environmental issues, for small groups of students at Compton-Drew Middle <strong>School</strong>; 3) devise<br />
<strong>in</strong>vestigations for the workshops about environmental issues embrac<strong>in</strong>g the sciences, the humanities,<br />
and the community; 4) each student will work with the professor <strong>in</strong>dividually and <strong>in</strong> their team, as well<br />
as seek<strong>in</strong>g advice of faculty from a specific disicipl<strong>in</strong>e, through the semester <strong>in</strong> the preparation of their<br />
evolv<strong>in</strong>g curricular plan. Dur<strong>in</strong>g the last two thirds of the semester WU students will be on-site dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />
the Compton-Drew school day, once a week on each Monday from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., to teach small<br />
group workshops for some of the sixth and seventh grade students. This course is open to freshmen,<br />
sophomores, and juniors. 2 units.<br />
