<strong>LIFE</strong> <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Delaware</strong> <strong>was</strong> <strong>more</strong> <strong>than</strong> <strong>just</strong> <strong>at</strong>tending <strong>clas</strong>ses,<br />

studying, and visiting with friends for many <strong>at</strong>hletic individuals.<br />

These students devoted personal time and energy to become part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

sports program provided by <strong>the</strong> university. It <strong>was</strong> <strong>the</strong>se students, working<br />

and playing toge<strong>the</strong>r, th<strong>at</strong> allowed our teams to achieve successful<br />

seasons. HOWEVER, teams were made up <strong>of</strong> <strong>more</strong> <strong>than</strong> <strong>just</strong> players.<br />

There were coaches, assistant coaches, <strong>at</strong>hletic trainers, doctors, <strong>of</strong>ficials,<br />

administr<strong>at</strong>ive personnel, as well as numerous o<strong>the</strong>rs th<strong>at</strong> all contributed<br />

to <strong>the</strong> well-being <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> team. It <strong>was</strong> this collabor<strong>at</strong>ion, on and<br />

<strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong> playing field, th<strong>at</strong> made true winning teams. WHETHER by entering<br />

<strong>the</strong> NCAA tournaments, like our football and basketball teams,<br />

or by learning <strong>the</strong> value <strong>of</strong> teamwork, <strong>the</strong> team members, coaches, trainers,<br />

and o<strong>the</strong>r involved individuals, made <strong>the</strong> 1991-92 year a memorable<br />

one for <strong>the</strong>mselves as well as <strong>the</strong> university community. MANY students<br />

remembered <strong>the</strong> excitement and thrill <strong>of</strong> w<strong>at</strong>ching our men's basketball<br />

team win <strong>the</strong> North Atlantic Conference Championship and head for <strong>the</strong><br />

NCAA tournament. A new sense <strong>of</strong> university spirit and pride started<br />

with our university teams and <strong>the</strong>ir competitive faces.<br />

tougher competitors.<br />

The volleyball team<br />

had a tough season. They<br />

lost 5 players from last<br />

year, and, because <strong>of</strong><br />

budget costs had no J.V.<br />

team this year. There<br />

were many returning<br />

players, but not many <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>m had much playing<br />

experience. However<br />

<strong>the</strong>y made <strong>the</strong> best <strong>of</strong><br />

wh<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong>y had; learning<br />

to work toge<strong>the</strong>r and became<br />

<strong>more</strong> focused on<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir play.<br />

The team got <strong>of</strong>f to a<br />

slow start but quickly<br />

turned it around <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Rutger's Tournament<br />

where <strong>the</strong>y posted 2 wins<br />

and 2 losses. After this<br />

tournament, <strong>the</strong> Hens<br />

won most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir home<br />

games and began to have<br />

a following by fans. Volleyball<br />

Head Coach Barbara<br />

Viera said, "We<br />

started out really slow.<br />

At one point we were 3-<br />

14 and turned it around<br />

<strong>the</strong> second half and went<br />

14-11."<br />

During <strong>the</strong> season, <strong>the</strong><br />

Hens broke many school<br />

records as a team and as<br />

individuals. Jill Graber,<br />

team captain, broke <strong>the</strong><br />

school record for <strong>the</strong><br />

number <strong>of</strong> assists in a<br />

game with 46. In <strong>the</strong><br />

game against Navy, <strong>the</strong><br />

team recorded 24 blocks<br />

is (assistant coach), Nicole Fisher, Ka- Beegle, Debbie Pick, Barbara Viera<br />

tie Nieradka, Liz Herman, Jen Stock, (head coach).<br />

Jerelyn Lawson, Phoebe Folk, Karen<br />

in a m<strong>at</strong>ch, which <strong>was</strong> a<br />

season high. Karen Beegle<br />

held <strong>the</strong> career record<br />

for <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong><br />

digs. Probably <strong>the</strong> most<br />

impressive record set <strong>was</strong><br />

by Coach Viera when she<br />

recorded her 500th career<br />

win.<br />

At <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> regular<br />

season <strong>the</strong> Hens were 16-<br />

23 and were invited to<br />

compete in <strong>the</strong> North<br />

Atlantic Conference<br />

Championship. At <strong>the</strong><br />

Championship <strong>the</strong>y went<br />
