<strong>Sexuality</strong> <strong>in</strong> the <strong>Media</strong>: Emerg<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Issues</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Africa</strong><br />
condemned the attempts to promote promiscuity, prostitution and<br />
homosexuality on human rights basis. The conference also condemned the<br />
prevention of men from marry<strong>in</strong>g more than one wife, because this is aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />
Islamic regulations. El Wafd, 1-3-2004 gave a summary of the<br />
recommendations: “regular sexual relations is important for general health<br />
<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g psychological health”... “impotence has an impact on the economic<br />
development as it affects self esteem and causes depression and the end result<br />
is to have non-productive and non-creative <strong>in</strong>dividuals”. The article quoted<br />
an expert op<strong>in</strong>ion that male circumcision prevents cancer of penis and cancer<br />
of the cervix of females. The article ended by suggest<strong>in</strong>g that Islam gave a<br />
better way for solv<strong>in</strong>g the problem of sexual tension by allow<strong>in</strong>g the marry<strong>in</strong>g<br />
of more than one wife. Other newspapers quoted some of the these issues but<br />
to a less degree (El-Wafd, 29-2-2004)<br />
El-Akhbar, 7-5-2004 featured an article about the “availability of Viagra for<br />
old people”. This article <strong>in</strong>dicated that a man 99 years old <strong>in</strong> S<strong>in</strong>gapore is us<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Viagra and he is <strong>in</strong> good health.<br />
El-Akhbar, 2-4-2004, also featured an article which suggests that “Viagra is<br />
dangerous for adolescents and youth”. El-Messaa on 29-2-2004 quoted a<br />
cohort study suggest<strong>in</strong>g that Viagra is not effective for women.<br />
Sexual Rights<br />
An article on 30-3- 2004 <strong>in</strong> El-Messaa covered the Arab Conference on Sexual<br />
Health, especially the session on “Sexual Rights”. The title was the “Intimate<br />
relations between spouses (sexual <strong>in</strong>tercourse) prolongs life”. The subtitle<br />
was “rejection of promiscuity and adherence to religious values”. In their<br />
<strong>in</strong>troduction the writers of the article stressed on the follow<strong>in</strong>g po<strong>in</strong>ts:<br />
- The percentage of women who reach the age of marriage and are not<br />
married approaches 35% <strong>in</strong> the Arab Countries, except <strong>in</strong> Palest<strong>in</strong>e<br />
where it is only 1%.<br />
- The suitable age at marriage for a girl is between 20 and 25.<br />
- Sexual rights is a part of Human Rights.<br />
- Rejection of the Copenhagen Group concern<strong>in</strong>g sexual rights. This<br />
<strong>in</strong>cludes the rejection of the attempts to prevent male circumcision on the<br />
basis that it is a mutilation of children. In this regard, they <strong>in</strong>dicated that<br />
statistics suggest that 46% and 20% of the children who are born <strong>in</strong> USA<br />
Pr<strong>in</strong>t <strong>Media</strong> Coverage Of <strong>Sexuality</strong> <strong>Issues</strong> <strong>in</strong> Egypt<br />
and Europe respectively, are circumcised for health reasons to prevent<br />
cancer of the penis.<br />
- Rejection of promotion of promiscuity and homosexuality on the basis of<br />
human rights.<br />
- There is no objection to marry<strong>in</strong>g more than one wife, provided that<br />
justice is assured concern<strong>in</strong>g them.<br />
Sexual and Reproductive Health Education<br />
Al-Ahrar, 17-4-2004 gave an overview of a programme carried out by The<br />
National Council for Motherhood and Child Hood aimed at health education<br />
of female adolescents. The programme was set up to clarify the issues and<br />
fight misconceptions and rumors. The programme is be<strong>in</strong>g implemented <strong>in</strong> 10<br />
governorates. On 2-4-2004, Al-Ahram, published an article titled “Women's<br />
health is the ma<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>dicator of the health of the community”. The subtitle was<br />
”Reproductive health education for university female students”. The article<br />
was about a programme on RH education for female students <strong>in</strong> one of the<br />
most prestigious Universitites, A<strong>in</strong> Shams University, <strong>in</strong> Cairo. This particular<br />
article was <strong>in</strong>formative, as it expla<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> detail the medical, social and legal<br />
dimensions of reproductive health. It, clearly mentioned the need for sexual<br />
health education for adolescents. Another programme was mentioned <strong>in</strong> an<br />
article <strong>in</strong> Al-Ahram 3-5-2004. This programme was targeted at women <strong>in</strong> one<br />
of the Upper Egyptian Governorates, near Cairo, called Geiza. The<br />
programme <strong>in</strong>volved 23 Health Units and 23 NGOs and targets women and<br />
girls. The ma<strong>in</strong> focus was on family plann<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
In fact, most of the articles about sexual and reproductive health education<br />
were news about programmes <strong>in</strong> the field. Al-Akhbar on 18-5-2004 reported<br />
on a programme to educate young people and women <strong>in</strong> rural areas.<br />
Family plann<strong>in</strong>g constitutes the major component of the media coverage.<br />
There are many reasons for that, among them, the statements made by<br />
President Mubarek about the population problem. President Mubarek, <strong>in</strong><br />
many <strong>in</strong>stances, mentioned the population problem as the top priority issue.<br />
In El-Akhbar, 3-1-2004 “Population Bomb is on the top of the world's problem<br />
<strong>in</strong> year 2004”). The previous day, the same newspaper published an article<br />
suggest<strong>in</strong>g that “Development of women helps <strong>in</strong> solv<strong>in</strong>g the population<br />
problem” (El-Ahbar, 2-1-2004)
