<strong>Sexuality</strong> <strong>in</strong> the <strong>Media</strong>: Emerg<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Issues</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Africa</strong><br />
The connection between violence by men and the <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> HIV <strong>in</strong>fection <strong>in</strong><br />
women was highlighted <strong>in</strong> an article published by Al-Ahram on 12-5-2004. The<br />
article highlighted the results of a study that was carried out <strong>in</strong> South <strong>Africa</strong>.<br />
The same newspaper, on the same day, published an article that suggests the<br />
prevalence of HIV/AIDS was reduced <strong>in</strong> Uganda due to the efforts of the<br />
Government of Uganda <strong>in</strong> fight<strong>in</strong>g the syndrome. Al-Ahram,, also, published<br />
an article on the l<strong>in</strong>k between HIV/AIDS and dementia, on 21-2-2004. The<br />
article, which quotes American scientists suggests that a special prote<strong>in</strong> is the<br />
cause of the death of bra<strong>in</strong> cells and causes the dementia.<br />
Al-Ahrar published an article on the economic impact of HIV/AIDS on 26-1-<br />
2004. They quoted the World Bank report which suggests that HIV/AIDS <strong>in</strong><br />
North <strong>Africa</strong> and Middle East, costs about 35% of the countries <strong>in</strong>come.<br />
A long article was published by Al-Ahram on 14-3-2004 which <strong>in</strong>dicates that<br />
half a million HIV/AIDS patients are found <strong>in</strong> the Arab countries and Egypt is<br />
the lowest. The article affirmed that the HIV/AIDS drugs will be available for<br />
free. In addition, the article affirmed that the prevalence rate <strong>in</strong> Sudan is the<br />
highest among the Arab countries.<br />
The role of media and art <strong>in</strong> fight<strong>in</strong>g HIV/AIDS was the issue that was<br />
addressed by news published <strong>in</strong> Al-Ahrar on 13-3-2004. The article was about<br />
a workshop that was held <strong>in</strong> one of the Upper Egypt governorates.<br />
Reproductive Health<br />
The vast majority of the articles were news about tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g courses,<br />
/conferences/sem<strong>in</strong>ars, and programmes and new service delivery po<strong>in</strong>ts. On<br />
19-1-2004, Al-Ahram and EL Wafd published news/ stories about a new project<br />
to support girls <strong>in</strong> 10 governorates to be aware about reproductive health. The<br />
project was designed and implemented by the Motherhood and Childhood<br />
Council. Al-Akhbar, EL-Wafd and Al-Ahram on 17-4-2004 and El-Messaa, 20-<br />
4-2004, published news about a tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g course for female teachers<br />
implemented by the Motherhood and Childhood Council for the same project.<br />
Al-Akhbar published this on 12-5-2004. 26 female teachers <strong>in</strong> 10 schools, one<br />
<strong>in</strong> each governorate were tra<strong>in</strong>ed to raise awareness of their female students<br />
about reproductive health.<br />
Pr<strong>in</strong>t <strong>Media</strong> Coverage Of <strong>Sexuality</strong> <strong>Issues</strong> <strong>in</strong> Egypt<br />
Al-Akhbar on 24-2-2004 published news about two conferences one to raise<br />
the awareness of girls on reproductive health, and the other to discuss women's<br />
reproductive health. While Al-Akbar on 17-3-2004 published news about a<br />
conference that addressed the need to provides citizens of squatter and<br />
deprived areas with reproductive health services. In fact, this was not a<br />
conference, it was a dissem<strong>in</strong>ation sem<strong>in</strong>ar for a research that addressed<br />
“Poverty and Its Impact on Reproductive Health”. EL-Wafd on 14-4-2004<br />
published news about a regional conference supported by the USAID that<br />
addressed the issue of susta<strong>in</strong>ability after the cessation of the fund<strong>in</strong>g from the<br />
donors. Al-Ahrar on 5-5-2004 published a news story about a conference<br />
address<strong>in</strong>g reproductive health <strong>in</strong> the context of the new millennium. Al-<br />
Ahram on 7-5-2004 quoted the M<strong>in</strong>ster of Health who said there is a strategy<br />
aimed at <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g the service delivery po<strong>in</strong>ts from 4600 to 6000. El-<br />
Gomohrrea published an article about the improvement of the quality of care<br />
<strong>in</strong> RH services <strong>in</strong> collaboration with 18 faculties of medic<strong>in</strong>e and nurs<strong>in</strong>g. The<br />
importance of pre-marital counsel<strong>in</strong>g was mentioned as an item among many<br />
others <strong>in</strong> some articles. However, EL-Wafd on 29-3-2004 highlighted it as a<br />
result of a conference organised by a department of sk<strong>in</strong> and venereal diseases<br />
<strong>in</strong> one of the universities. Al-Ahram, on 14-3-2004, published an <strong>in</strong>formative<br />
article on premarital counsel<strong>in</strong>g and exam<strong>in</strong>ation. In this article, there was a<br />
call for a law that enforces premarital exam<strong>in</strong>ations. It is worth mention<strong>in</strong>g<br />
that the services for premarital exam<strong>in</strong>ations do not exist except <strong>in</strong> few<br />
specialized centers <strong>in</strong> Egypt. There are many advertisements about it, but the<br />
researchers <strong>in</strong> a recent study (Serour, et, al,2004), <strong>in</strong>dicate that the services are<br />
unavailable <strong>in</strong> spite of the demand created by televison<br />
Adolescent reproductive health was discussed <strong>in</strong> several articles: In Al-Ahram<br />
on 30-3-2004, two articles were published, one suggested that “Early<br />
diagnosis of endocr<strong>in</strong>e disorders protects girls from cystic ovaries”. The<br />
second was about “A national campaign to protect adolescents from<br />
addiction”. Al-Ahram and Al-Ahrar on 2-3-2004, also published an article<br />
about a conference: “Together to Support Adolescents and Youth”. The<br />
conference dealt with: The Role of family <strong>in</strong> support<strong>in</strong>g adolescents; role of<br />
civil society <strong>in</strong> guard<strong>in</strong>g aga<strong>in</strong>st early marriage, addiction, violence, secret<br />
marriage and AIDS and the role of the Mass <strong>Media</strong>. Al-Ahram on 28-2-2004,<br />
published news about tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g courses for psychologists on how to deal with
