Definition: ‘Adequate’ sanitation
• Separates excreta from human contact and ensures that
excreta does not re-enter the immediate household
environment
• Safe (protects the user from risks such as vermin, falling
into the pit)
• Durable
• Household or shared toilet within or nearby the plot, shared
by no more than 5 families or 30 people, whichever is
fewer, and used by people who know each other
• Accessible at all times (7 days a week, 24 hours a day)
• Accessible to all members of household, including those
with disabilities
• Protects users from culturally-inappropriate exposure or
invasion of privacy
