A message from the Director of Alumni Relations Fuqua’s Alumni Network —“Quality, not Quantity” I’ve learned a lot over the past year in my position as director of alumni relations about Fuqua alumni and the value of our network. Overall I would whittle the learning down to one key cliché: “Quality, not quantity.” While our network has grown to just over 10,000 impressive alumni, it still is modest in comparison to our peers who boast larger populations of graduates. I’ve been asked on occasion if that can be seen as a drawback to Fuqua, and I’ve never had to hesitate in answering that, no, it’s not a drawback at all. In fact, I would argue that because we are smaller than our peers, and because we know it, we are more likely to respond to a request sent through our Fuqua network than perhaps an alumnus from another school. Our network may be leaner than others, but it’s certainly effective. In the past year I’ve worked with current students and alumni to help facilitate meetings and interactions between Fuquans and have been so impressed by the willingness for everyone to help out. The requests have ranged from getting information about a new city to finding other alumni in a similar career field to helping business students set up receptions or information sessions around the world. It’s nice to be part of a group where the standard response is “let me know how can I help.” What’s also been satisfying is the commitment of alumni to maintaining quality in the network. In speaking with one of my colleagues from the career management center, I’ve learned that alums will often pick up the phone to share feedback about the interview process and the preparedness of students. The spirit of the feedback is productive, wanting to help make sure that individuals are representing themselves and the school in the best light so that recruiting efforts can continue and Fuqua’s good name be maintained. We ask that you keep picking up the phone and sending those e-mails. Quality is paramount, especially in this economy and with such strong competition from other MBA programs. The Fuqua School of Business Thank you to those of you who have been an active part of the network for the important role you play in bolstering our most important resource as alumni. Every time you respond to an e-mail or phone call, every time you check the directory for someone who might help you, or every time you think that there must be someone at Fuqua who can be a resource for you, you’re keeping the network active and strong. Part of our goal in alumni relations is to provide the infrastructure to help you use the network as easily as possible. Continue to send us your feedback on how we’re doing, and we’ll continue to respond as best as we can. Look for big changes coming soon in the alumni web site that will address feedback you’ve sent in the past, enjoy the changes you’ve seen with our e-newsletter FuquaNet, and look out for events being scheduled in your city with a local Fuqua or Duke alumni club. Volunteer to be your class’s correspondent and gather updates from your classmates to contribute to this magazine’s Class Notes section. Let us know when you’re back in town and if you’re able to link up with students and faculty. And most of all, be sure to keep your contact information up-to-date so we and your peers can reach you.
