Education in the Summer AlBERt EinStEin SCHool oF MEdiCinE SuMMER EnRiCHMEnt PRoGRAM Daniel McLendon ‘11 William Boateng ‘11 Joshua Obeng ‘11 Three St. Raymond students participated in the Albert Einstein College of Medicine Summer Enrichment Program this past summer. For six weeks during July and August, William Boateng ‘11, Daniel McLendon ‘11 and Joshua Obeng ‘11 spent four days a week shadowing medical professionals. According to Nilda Soto, the assistant dean for diversity enhancement at the Albert Einstein School of Medicine, “The summer Enrichment Program, begun in 1988, allows high school age students throughout the Bronx with an interest in medicine, science or health care the opportunity to learn about careers in those fields, while meeting with and shadowing professionals and strengthening their study skills and habits in a supportive, interactive environment.” During the program — Mondays through Thursdays — students attend classes and Welcome new faCuLty Ms. Justine Davies, Earth Science and Chemistry. Ms. Davies, originally from the Pelham section of the Bronx, is a graduate of Sarah Lawrence College and the College of Notre Dame in Maryland. She comes to St. Raymond from Seton Keough High School in Baltimore where she taught Biology, Physical Science and Marine Biology. She also coached track and cross-country. Ms. Davies was also a Lasallian Volunteer in Oakland, California where she worked in an after-school program for middle and high school students. 4 Mr. Silvestre Padron, Music. Mr. Padron, born and raised in Venezuela, comes to St. Raymond after eight years as a music teacher in Rockaway Park, New York. Before moving to the United States in 1997, he traveled to several countries with the choir of East University in Venezuela. Mr. Padron is a graduate of Wagner College and attended California State University in Los Angeles. receive counseling about careers in science and medicine in the morning and at the office of a doctor or health care professional in the afternoon. This program offers a special opportunity for students to get a ‘hands on’ experience in research labs, clinical hospital settings and private practices. It is an inside view—one that many do not often see of the medical field with unlimited resources. It is also an opportunity that allows students with a common interest to interact and learn from one another. Soto adds that “when students think about what they would like to do for their careers, this program makes them aware of the many options that exist for them, limited only by their desire to pursue them.” At the end of the summer program, each student gives an oral presentation about their experience to all the participants. lasallian Educator Of the year The recipient of the Lasallian Educator Award for 2009 is the school’s art teacher, Mr. Ed Mouzon, a graduate of St. Raymond, class of 1982. The annual distinguished Lasallian Educator Award, chosen by the faculty and staff, honors an educator in a Lasallian School who exemplifies the ideals of St. John Baptist de La Salle in the 21st century. This award is presented by the Regional Board of Education of the Christian Brothers in the name of all Lasallians. The requirements necessary to receive this award are as follows: the recipient must be an educational minister at St. Raymond for at least five years, the recipient must work in association with the school community to foster gospel values in the lives of the staff and students, and the recipient must con’t on page 5
Summer School upgrades St. Raymond went ‘under construction’ this past summer. The entire school building was painted, new student bathrooms were installed on all three floors, the Purdy Street staircase was completely overhauled, the finance office and the health offices were moved and are new offices. Additionally, a Hall of Fame plaque was installed in the entrance to the gym (see page 23 for details). 1. 1, 2. The Purdy Street staircase 3. The new handrails 4. New student bathrooms installed on all three floors see the Lasallian School as a place of educational excellence, which shares in the teaching mission of the Catholic Church. This award is the most notable award the school can bestow upon a faculty member. Mr. Mouzon reflects all of the above criteria and is truly respected by both peers and students alike. He has dedicated himself to the mission of St. Raymond in a most unselfish manner as an educator over the past 11 years. He is a teacher who has “touched the hearts” of our students, and has been a role model for his colleagues by his dedication and exemplary behavior and attitude. Mr. Mouzon is known throughout the school community as a tireless volunteer at all of our school’s events. He is accessible and accommodating to his students—his art students and beyond.
