It was necessary to impro\"i,e a range ,cale, as the one on the drum would not<br />
re,pond. One was drawn, blueprinted and pasted on the drum, and has given<br />
efficient service. Six telephones were installed, two to each observing instrument<br />
and a gun data phone at the gun. One time-interval bell only was installed in a<br />
box on the outside of the house covering the gun as it can be heard at both<br />

obsen-ing stations as well as by the gun crew. On account of the limited number<br />
of observing instruments and telephone, available, the observers do the spotting.<br />
Separate stations for spotting w~uld be better if materiel permitted. The mechanical<br />
work neces,ary to mount the gun was done by Captain Ernest L. Lucas,<br />
Ordnance-Resen-e, a professor of mechanical engineering at this institution, who<br />
