Constanza
“God is everywhere but Lives in Constanza”
Constanza, a municipality of the province
of La Vega that lies deep within the
Cordillera Central, as geographical
characteristics that make it the cradle of
diverse ecosystems, amongst which one
can highlight the Valley of Constanza, the
highest in the country at 1,200 meters
above sea level; the valley of Tireo, La
Culata and Valle Nuevo, all of which
register temperatures as low as 0º during
winter.
In the areas of San José de las Matas,
Constanza and Jarabacoa, temperatures
rage for most of the year between 5 ºC
and 20 ºC (41 ºF to 68 ºF) , allowing for
fruits, vegetables and ornamental flowers
typical of mild climates to be successfully
grown in the country. The best quality
of produce, whether destined for local
consumption or exportation, is found in
this region.
• How to Get There
If driving, take the paved highway from
Casabito. Rent a strong vehicle to climb the
hill and make the day trip, as on occasions
the fog affects visibility. On Duarte Highway,
reduce the speed some 100 km after Bonoa.

At Cruce del Abanico, there is a sign to the
right indicating Exit 12, the way to Constanza.
The route consists of about 50 kms of hairpin
curves that snake their way under the watchful
eye of a blue sky, and walls of mountains
clad in greenery and wild flowers. If you are
traveling by bus, you can take a taxi, motoconcho,
or horse to get there.
• Where to Go
Companies offer excursions on all-terrain
vehicles, monster trucks and safari jeeps. You
can tour forests and botanical gardens and
go to Las Pirámides located in the National
Park and Scientific Reserve of Valle Nuevo.
You can even plan to go on a nocturnal hare
hunt. According to experts, this may be the
geographical center of the island; and the
alpine vegetation that surrounds the area,
among the coldest in the country, has been the
subject of comparative studies with Europe’s
Alps. It is worth enjoying this spectacle that
the Salto de Aguas Blancas offers at 1,680
meters above sea level. Indeed, with yearround
temperatures between 10 ºC to 12 ºC,
the Arroyazo and the Balneario Las Palmas
have become a favorite vacation spot for
Dominicans during la Semana Santa (Holy
Week).

There are only a few hotels in Constanza and
its surrounding areas; however, it is possible to
find comfortable accommodations.
