Foto: DEUTZ AG Dear DEUTZ-LIVE readers, the global economy is in a state of massive flux. Last year saw the start of a financial crisis that has grown into a generalised economic recession. DEUTZ and its customers are not immune from the drop in demand that has accompanied this development, either. Of course, being DEUTZ, we have responded to this. Our goal is to adapt our cost structures to these changed market conditions while at the same time keeping an eye on the future; after all, in times of crisis, you have to remember to keep your head up and your eyes forwards. Investments in innovation Dr. Helmut Leube, CEO of DEUTZ AG Shaping challenges Even though forecasts are hard or almost impossible to make right now, we're doing everything we can to boost DEUTZ AG's “fitness for the future” to benefit our customers. For us, this means that we need to invest in the future, since DEUTZ has a lot of strengths that will help it overcome the recession and afterwards return to a profitable path to growth. Strong customer focus and technologically advanced products are just two examples of this. Dr Margarete Haase, who since 1st April has been the new member of our Management Board, which has now shrunk to just three members, responsible for the areas of Finance, Human Resources, Investor Relations and Service, knows that the future comes from the past. DEUTZ LIVE has interviewed Dr Haase. On page 14 you can find out what the DEUTZ brand means for her and what goals she has set herself in her role as member of the management board of DEUTZ. Editorial Thanks to investments in innovation, we are securing our company's continued existence, since DEUTZ is synonymous with high-quality products, outstanding service and technological expertise. On the background of ever-stricter exhaust regulations and the associated growing importance of affiliated technologies, this represents a particular challenge for the exhaust technology sector. Ahead of us lies the challenge of Tier 4 emissions stage. By 2011, with the start of Tier 4 interim, the first step will have been made towards even stricter exhaust regulations. We are countering this challenge head-on with the creation of our own product line, “Exhaust Aftertreatment” (EAT), which focuses on this sector. Under the direction of experience project manager Wilfried Riemann, the new product line is showing how important we believe future exhaust technologies and customer-optimised solutions are. From page 8, you can learn some interesting facts about the new product line and our tailored, application-related, customised client solutions for the system integration of engine and exhaust technology. An innovative and environmentally-conscious venture, SAME-DEUTZ FAHR is providing the fruit and wine-growing industry with its first crop towing truck with stepless gears, of course powered by DEUTZ: An exemplary symbiosis of reliability and efficiency - and it saves fuel, too! (Page 15). These are all factors that the construction equipment manufacturer Robel also pays close attention to. On the Munich and Nuremberg underground network, DEUTZ engines ensure that Robel's track equipment arrives quickly and reliably at its place of deployment either above ground or below it. Powerhouses that not only offer sturdy reliability but - equipped with a DEUTZ particulate filter system - are also low on emissions (Page 16). At work all over the world As well as innovative spirit, our trademark quality is our engines' performance. Whether it be in the desert or on the ice - you can rely on DEUTZ. In this edition, we will also be showing you some of the extreme conditions, that our engines operate in. While in January 2009 two Czech racing cars made the difficult journey through the Chilean Atacama desert in the South America rally with a DEUTZ engine under their bonnet (Page 20), here in Germany an ice breaker powered by DEUTZ ensured that ships were able to cross the frozen Elbe once again (Page 18).
