Education and other important sectors.<br />

53. A sum of Rs. 916 crore has been provided in the year 2010-<strong>11</strong> by the PIDB for<br />

creation of Infrastructure. The important projects are -<br />

a) Road Sector – 6 lane southern by-pass - Ludhiana, 4 high level bridges on Sutlej<br />

and Beas Rivers, 25 RoBs/RuBs.<br />

b) Transport Sector – Mass Bus Rapid System for Bathinda, Bus terminals at<br />

Bathinda, Sangrur, Kapurthala, Faridkot and Inter-<strong>State</strong> check post.<br />

c) Irrigation Sector – Revamping and up-gradation of irrigation canals<br />

d) Tourism and Cultural Affairs – Institute of Hotel Management at Mohali,<br />

operation and maintenance of Gobindgarh Qila.<br />

e) Sports Sector – Sports complex at Mohali.<br />

f) Water Supply and Sewerage - Schemes in historical cities of Khadoor Sahib,<br />

Goindwal etc.<br />

g) Urban Development – Habitat Centre and Five Star hotel at Mohali, multistorey<br />

parking at Wahga <strong>Board</strong>er etc. infrastructure, training grants, R&D Studies<br />

etc.<br />

PIDB has initiated 44 projects under PPP mode till date with an estimated cost of Rs.<br />

2231 crore. Private investment of Rs 2020 crore has been facilitated in <strong>Punjab</strong>.<br />

TRANSPORT<br />

54. Roads and communication network hold the key to the overall growth of<br />

economy. It is a basic infrastructure for promotion of agriculture, industry, trade and business.<br />

The <strong>Punjab</strong> has an extensive 59483 km network of roads comprising of 1239 km of National<br />

Highways, 1393 km of <strong>State</strong> Highways, 51059 km of village link roads and 5752 km of urban<br />

roads. The state government plans to upgrade all the important link roads with more than 10<br />

metre width into plan roads. In the Annual Plan 2010-<strong>11</strong>, the approved outlay is Rs 519.34 crore<br />

against an expenditure of Rs 420.44 crore last year. Besides, substantive funds would be<br />

invested from PIDB World Bank, NABARD and Government of India.<br />

55. Under Build, Operate and Transfer (BoT) Scheme, upgradation of 9 major<br />

corridors of 520 km length at an estimated cost of Rs. 624 Cr. is near completion. Work on 25<br />
