1601 ANMs, 181 Ayurvedic, <strong>11</strong>2 Homoeopathic doctors and 293 Up-Vaids were recruited in<br />

the year 2009-10. Recruitment of additional 400 doctors is under process.<br />

102. Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojna providing insurance cover upto Rs.30,000 to<br />

BPL People families has been extended to all the 20 districts. Mahatma Gandhi National Rural<br />

Employment Guarantee Scheme [MGNREGS] beneficiaries who have worked for more than 15<br />

days during the preceding financial year, will also be now eligible for Rashtriya Swasthya Bima<br />

Yojna. All school children are being screened under the School Health Programme. Students<br />

suffering from congenital heart diseases and cancer are being treated at PGI, Chandigarh and<br />

major private hospitals free of cost by the <strong>State</strong> Government. The referral treatment for school<br />

students in all Government Hospitals was made free in June, 2009. All the essential drugs are<br />

being supplied free of cost to the patients in Government hospitals. Jan Aushadhi Stores for<br />

supplying medicines at cheaper rates have been opened in all the 20 district hospitals and more<br />

such stores would be opened in the bigger Sub-divisional Hospitals in the year 2010-<strong>11</strong>.<br />

103. The <strong>State</strong> has prepared a Rs 346 cr plan for upgradation of Health Infrastructure<br />

and equipments in the hospitals . 5 District Hospitals and 3 Sub Divisional Hospitals are being<br />

upgraded at an estimated cost of Rs. 23 crore. 3 Community Health Centres are under<br />

construction. In the year 2010-<strong>11</strong>, the Government proposes to upgrade the Civil Hospitals at<br />

Faridkot, Sangrur and Abohar at an estimated cost of Rs. 10 crore. 8 Primary Health Centres are<br />

proposed to be upgraded to Community Health Centres at an estimated cost of Rs. 20 crores.<br />

104. The <strong>State</strong> is successfully implementing National Rural Health Mission for which<br />

the outlay has been increased from Rs. 250 crore to Rs. 315 crore. More than 1600 Auxiliary<br />

Nurse Midwives and 1089 Staff Nurses have been recruited under National Rural Health<br />

Mission. While the upgradation of rural infrastructure is taken care of under NRHM, a sum of<br />

Rs. 36 crore has been separately provided for the Urban Health Infrastructure.<br />

105. The Government has undertaken comprehensive upgradation of 3 Government<br />

Medical Colleges and Baba Farid University of Health Sciences at an estimated cost of Rs. 284<br />

crore. The works are likely to be completed by 20<strong>11</strong>-12. The <strong>Punjab</strong> Institute of Medical<br />

Sciences, Jalandhar has been handed over to the Private Partner and the institute is likely to<br />

make admissions in the current year. The <strong>State</strong> Government has earmarked Rs. 43 crores for<br />

Medical Education Department in the year 2010-<strong>11</strong>. The Government has decided to fill up all<br />

the vacant posts of faculty and other paramedical staff.<br />
