Chemical production
never sleeps – The Stade
site in 2006.
Salt is the raw material for producing
diverse basic and specialtychemicals
at the Stade site.
This photo shows a drilling rig
at the Ohrensen mining site.
location by choosing the following
words: “At the moment the most perfect
machine in the world for the chemical
recovery of salt”. And since this is literally
being developed on a green field,
Koch remarks laconically: “from the cow
to Dow.”
Dow and the other industrial companies
are not welcomed without reservation
by everybody in Stade. Until now, the
city was mainly an administrative hub
and had no experience in dealing with
industrial production right outside their
On June 1, 1972,
the first product is
shipped out of Stade:
it is a tank wagon
with hydrochloric acid.
front door. In an open dialogue over
time, however, Dow succeeds in winning
over the majority of the population.
The city, which has previously
hardly had any funds for modern hospitals
and schools, benefits from the enormous
tax revenue from industry and
becomes one of the wealthiest communities
in Lower Saxony. This is how,
for example, the renovation of the picturesque
old town becomes possible.
It subsequently develops into a gem
and a tourist magnet.
