at Olefinverbund. This success is possible thanks to significant support by the federal government and the states of Saxony-Anhalt and Saxony. Manfred Aumann, the former project director for the restructuring process, recalls: “The realization of this large investment program in a comparatively short period of time would not have been possible without the constructive cooperation with the responsible authorities. Furthermore, the great acceptance in the neighborhood of all sites was ultimately key to the fact that none of the projects was delayed due to missing permits.” And Dow also contributed significantly. More than half of the total order volume was assigned to companies in the new states – a crucial kick-start effect for the local economy. The concept aims at closely linking the diverse material flow, supply, and production chains as well as creating added value in terms of safety and services for Dow and the resident companies. This also creates additional jobs. Eventually, the restructuring process itself results in a significant loss of jobs. Yet it is the only possible way to maintain a viable core of the chemical industry in Central Germany. In June 2000, the site is finally completely integrated into the Dow network and since 2003, it operates under the name of Dow Olefinverbund GmbH. With its locations in Schkopau, Böhlen, Leuna and Teutschenthal as brine mining and underground storage area, Dow Olefinverbund is now the largest Dow site in Germany and as such, significantly impacts the economic development of the entire region.
