Dear reader, it is exciting to look at the humble beginnings from which The Dow Chemical Company gained a foothold in Europe and in Germany. Fifty years after its start in Frankfurt, Dow in Germany represents our largest production base and the most important market outside the United States. This brochure traces the very beginnings when Dow pioneers established themselves and prevailed on the German market – one of the most demanding markets in the world. Today, Dow enjoys great respect in the field of chemistry, among our customers, and among the people in the communities around our sites. The commitment of our employees in Germany made this success story possible, as did the quality of our products and the countless technological solutions we continue to provide our customers with. Dear reader, Germany has a very special relevance to me. When I held the role of finance director for Dow in Germany in the eighties, I was living in Stade and Frankfurt/Main for three years. A few years later, in the mid-nineties, I was privileged to be part of a very exciting milestone in the company’s 50 years journey: the privatization of the Central German Olefinverbund. After long negotiations with Treuhandanstalt a viable plan for the comprehensive modernization of the locations had been developed and implemented. Today, Dow Central Germany is one of the safest and most efficient Dow sites globally. The development of Dow in Germany is very impressive. Billions of Euro have been invested within only a few decades, a highly efficient network of manufacturing sites has been set up and excellent customer relationships have been built. There have been years when the main portion of Dow’s global capital was invested in Germany. Thus, the company laid the cornerstone for the excellent reputation it has gained in Germany, the “cradle of chemistry,” over time. To stand our ground next to the big German competitors has only been possible through the efficiency, creativity, accuracy, and persistence of our German colleagues. I have always been impressed by their dedication and constructive response to change. Dow has often faced significant change over the last 50 years – as it does today. The company’s strategic focus on more innovative, more market-driven solutions is of great benefit for Dow in Germany. The nation provides impressive know-how, leadership in many future technologies, and continues to invest in research and development to help drive its role as a hotbed of innovation. This is why Germany is highly attractive to Dow. As the largest market in Europe and leader in industrial manufacturing, Germany offers unparalleled potential to our business units.
