STEP 3a HARTNELL COLLEGE STAAR* Placement Assessment and Orientation STAAR*—Success Through Assessment, Advisement/Orientation and Registration YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED What is the STAAR* assessment? No appointments required. See attached Assessment Calendar. The STAAR* assessment is an evaluation of your basic skills in reading, writing, and mathematics— skills that are important to academic success. Understanding your abilities in these basic skill areas is important in helping determine the selection of appropriate courses and meeting your educational objectives. Why should I participate in STAAR*? The STAAR* placement assessment is designed to assist you in planning your educational goals and to help you successfully complete your Hartnell College classes. Who should participate in STAAR* assessment? All New, Returning, Transfer or Concurrently Enrolled students who have one of the following educational goals: Associate Degree, Transfer or Vocational Certificate, or if you are enrolling in six units or more or any English or math course or any course with English or Mathematics as a prerequisite. English STAAR*: The English portion of the STAAR* placement assessment includes a multiple-choice reading test. Math STAAR* Requirements: You must take the Math STAAR* test if you plan to enroll in the following courses: Elementary Algebra (MAT-121), Intermediate Algebra (MAT-123), or Geometry (MAT-122) or any of the math labs in these series. If you wish to enroll for a course in which MAT-123 is a prerequisite, you must provide college transcripts to a Hartnell College Counselor showing that you have completed the equivalent course. The transcripts may be either official or unofficial. The counselor will then assist you in completing a Prerequisite Clearance Form for you to submit to Admissions/registration. This should be done at least 2 working days before you register. Remember, all prerequisites must be completed with a “C” grade or better. We recommend that you consult with a Hartnell College Counselor for confirmation prior to enrolling in classes. English as Second Language (ESL): For those students who have limited English proficiency, the ESL STAAR* assessment may be a more appropriate assessment. ESL STAAR* includes an assessment of your writing and mathematical skills. Assessment Services for Students with Disabilities: Students with visual, hearing or learning disabilities may arrange for modified testing services by contacting the Disabled Student Services Program (DSP&S) at 755-6760. Readers, page magnifiers, individual testing sessions and other services are available to students who request them. Attention High School Students:All high school students must submit the completed and signed Concurrent Enrollment Form to Hartnell's Office of Admission and Records prior to registration. These forms can be obtained from High School Counselors or from Hartnell College Office of Admissions and Records (C-150). 44 Am I exempt from the STAAR* assessment? Students may be exempt from the STAAR* assessment if they have the proper documentation and: � Have earned an AA/AS or more advanced degree. � Have completed both English 253 and Math 201 at Hartnell College or equivalent courses at another college or university with a 'C' or higher grade. � Have completed the basic skill assessment at another California College within the last two years. Present a copy of your assessment scores to a Hartnell College Counselor for review. Proper documentation includes copies of transcripts, diplomas and/or assessment results and attached to a Prerequisite Clearance Form. This form with attached documentation must be signed by a Counselor and submitted to the Records Evaluator in Admissions and Records (C-150). Who should participate in Counseling 21: Orientation? Orientation is mandatory for all new Hartnell College students enrolling in 6.0 units or more. Students should enroll in Counseling 21 (Student Skills for Success: Orientation) prior to or during their first semester at Hartnell College. Counseling 21 is designed to acquaint students with Hartnell College’s policies, procedures, and academic requirements. A list of Counseling 21 course offerings can be found in this Schedule of Classes. Am I exempt from Orientation? Or, Am I exempt from Counseling/Advisement Services? Students may be exempt from Orientation or Counseling/ Advisement if they: � Are enrolling in less than 6.0 units that are not Math or English and your goal is personal interest. � Have earned an Associate or more advanced degree, you must provide proof to Counselor for a Clearance Form. � Are enrolled in and have received orientation services at another college or university; you must provide proof to a Counselor for a Prerequisite Clearance Form. � Have passed the COU 21: Orientation exam with a 70% or greater score. Exempted students may participate in orientation or counseling services if they so choose. Should I see a Counselor? All students are encouraged to schedule an appointment with a Counselor prior to registration for assistance with educational planning. Financial Aid Applicants without a high school diploma or GED must demonstrate the “Ability to Benefit” from college course work by passing a standardized test before receiving federal financial assistance.

The Hartnell Assessment Center is located in CAB 167A, inside the Financial Aid Office. Students will be asked to show a picture I.D before testing. Accuplacer Assessment takes approximately 2 hours. The Assessment includes English, Math, ESL or Ability to Benefit (ATB) exam. Drop in testing – No appointment required. Note: Closing time allows 2 hours for students to complete the Assessment. Please arrive before the Assessment Center closes at the time posted.
