Experience clearly teaches us that the benefits resulting from large-scale facilities such as<br />
<strong>TESLA</strong> cannot be accurately predicted.That said,it is also true that major advances in science<br />
<strong>and</strong> the opening up of new areas of knowledge are generally associated with the introduction<br />
of more sophisticated or completely new types of instruments. Investigative instruments<br />
used for interdisciplinary research are especially important in this regard because<br />
they act at the points at which various areas of thought <strong>and</strong> knowledge overlap. As such,<br />
they promote creativity.<br />
The facilities of the <strong>TESLA</strong> research center will be available to innovative companies as well<br />
as scientists pursuing basic research. Research groups from universities around the world,<br />
various Max Planck Institutes <strong>and</strong> other research centers will be able to exploit <strong>TESLA</strong>’s accelerator<br />
facilities <strong>and</strong> laboratories. So too will industrial laboratories <strong>and</strong> companies. <strong>TESLA</strong><br />
will offer all of these users the opportunity to conduct scientific <strong>and</strong> technical research at a<br />
first-class facility in an international environment.<br />
