ACDC: Armitstead Child Development Centre.<br />

ENT Clinic: Ear, Nose <strong>and</strong> Throat Clinic.<br />

NICU: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Specialist unit <strong>with</strong>in the Special Care<br />

baby Unit, where a greater amount <strong>of</strong> monitoring <strong>and</strong> support is needed<br />

<strong>for</strong> a baby's needs.<br />

SCBU: Special Care Baby Unit.<br />

MEDICAL TERMS<br />

Acute: The short-term crisis phase <strong>of</strong> an illness.<br />

Chronic: Lasting <strong>for</strong> a long time.<br />

Congenital: Present at birth.<br />

Cranial: Relating to the skull.<br />

Gastrostomy: A surgical opening into the stomach from the abdomen, to enable a<br />

feeding tube to be passed.<br />

Naso-gastric tube: A tube that is passed from the nostril, down the back <strong>of</strong> the throat<br />

into the stomach, then secured in place to the cheek by tape. This<br />

may be used to give feeds or top-up feeds not taken by mouth.<br />

Prognosis: The <strong>for</strong>ecast <strong>of</strong> the course <strong>and</strong> probable outcome <strong>of</strong> a disease or<br />

condition.<br />
