SPECIALTY CABLE CONSTRUCTION OPTIONS
Choose from the Alpha Wire Company’s many manufacturing capabilities to design the specialty
cable that will meet your environmental needs and electronic/electrical requirements.

INSULATION OPTIONS:
■ POLYVINYLCHLORIDE (PVC)
General purpose and most popular. Flame retardant, chemical resistant,
good insulating properties and moderate cost. Temperature range
60°C to 105°C.
■ POLYETHYLENE (PE)
Superior electrical properties to PVC. Not as flexible. Not flame retardant.
Temperature range to 80°C.
■ POLYPROPYLENE (PP)
Similar to PE. Less flexible than PE. Not flame retardant. Temperature
range to 80°C.
■ THERMOPLASTIC ELASTOMER (TPE)
Good electrical properties. Temperature range to 125°C. Highly flame
resistant. Low corrosive outgassing.
■ FOAMED POLYETHYLENE (FPE)
Superior electrical properties to polyethylene.
■ FOAMED POLYPROPYLENE (FPP)
Superior electrical properties to polypropylene.
■ PVC WITH NYLON JACKET
Increased cut-through strength, abrasion and chemical resistant. Good
for use in high-flex applications due to low coefficient of friction.
■ HYTREL ®
Flexible and abrasion resistant insulation. Excellent for use in high-flex
and torsion cables. Poor flame retardancy.
■ TEFLON ®
High temperature range, 200°C-250°C. Flame retardant. Excellent
electrical properties and outstanding chemical resistance.
SHIELDING OPTIONS:
■ ALUMINUM/POLYESTER FOIL SHIELD
Thin and lightweight. Provides 100% coverage over cable core or
conductor pairs. Easy to terminate with stranded tinned copper drain
wire. Excellent shielding at high frequencies.
■ TINNED COPPER BRAID
Provides mechanical protection. Maximum coverage approximately
95%. More difficult to terminate than Aluminum/Polyester. Best
shielding at low frequencies.
■ SPIRAL/SERVE WRAP COPPER
Used in many high-flex cables. More flexible than braid. Easier to
terminate than braid. Performs best when used at low frequencies.
Provides coverage up to 95%-97%.
■ SUPRASHIELD ®
Aluminum/Polyester/Aluminum (triple laminate foil shield) with
stranded tinned copper drain wire and 70% tinned copper braid shield.
For maximum protection against EMI/RFI interference. Easy to
terminate with drain wire. Foil provides 100% cable core coverage
with the added mechanical protection of copper braid.
JACKETING OPTIONS:
■ POLYVINYLCHLORIDE (PVC)
Good flame and moisture resistance. Easy to strip jacket for termination
of conductors. Good flexibility. Temperature range to 105°C.
■ POLYURETHANE (PUR)
Very good resistance to oils, fuels, solvents and water. Twice the
tensile strength of PVC. Three times the tear and abrasion resistance
of PVC. Low temperature flexibility to –20°C.
■ POLYETHYLENE (PE)
Five times the water resistance of PVC. Good for direct burial
applications. Excellent for outdoor use.
■ THERMOPLASTIC ELASTOMER (TPE)
Three times the low temperature flexibility of most PVC. Low
temperature capability to –60°C. High temperature to 125°C.
Resistant to oils, fuels, solvents and water. Highly flame resistant.
■ TEFLON ® (FEP)
Excellent high and low temperature performance. From –80°C to
200°C. Impervious to all chemicals, acids, fuels, solvent and water.
