Donald Pope-Davis, Ph.D.<br />
Vice President and Associate Provost; Professor, Psychology<br />
Biography<br />
Donald Pope-Davis, who joined the University of Notre Dame faculty in 2000, studies in the<br />
areas of multicultural psychology, counseling, and education. Specifically, he is interested<br />
in cultural and racial identity development, cultural competency training, development,<br />
and assessment. Other areas of research include multicultural supervision in professional<br />
psychology, development of multicultural measures for assessing environments and supervision,<br />
issues of mental health of people of color, and cross-cultural communications.<br />
Pope-Davis is the co-author of three books: Multicultural Counseling Competencies: Assessment,<br />
Education and Supervision; The Intersections of Race, Class and Gender in Multicultural<br />
Counseling; and, most recently, Handbook of Multicultural Competencies in Counseling and<br />
Psychology. Pope-Davis has published numerous articles in the field of psychology. He also is a<br />
research fellow of the American Psychology <strong>Association</strong>. Based upon a recent national ranking,<br />
Pope-Davis was ranked third in the country among scholars in his field.<br />
Pope-Davis was elected vice president and associate provost at Notre Dame in July 2007. He is responsible for leading and<br />
managing the Provost’s Office’s involvement in the faculty recruitment and hiring process, tenure and promotions procedures,<br />
mentoring programs for faculty, and the creation and administration of new programs to help prepare faculty leaders to carry out<br />
administrative tasks. His previous administrative experience includes service for five years in the Notre Dame Graduate School—<br />
as assistant vice president from 2002 to 2004, and associate vice president for the following two years. He served on an interim<br />
basis for the 2006 to 2007 academic year as dean of the Graduate School. He directs Notre Dame’s TRIO programs — Upward<br />
Bound and Talent Search — all federally-funded educational opportunity outreach programs designed to motivate and support<br />
students from disadvantaged backgrounds. He has served since 2007 on the NCAA Committee on Athletic Certification.<br />
A graduate of Benedictine University with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and theology, Pope-Davis earned his doctorate in<br />
counseling psychology from Stanford University.<br />
Lecture<br />
The Role of Race and Culture in our Society: Implications for our Emerging Communities<br />
As the U.S. becomes more diverse, there is a need to understand the different psychological and social issues that affect crosscultural<br />
development. This lecture discusses the role that race and culture identity development play in this process and the<br />
implications it has on behavior, stereotypes, and attitudes.<br />
