5. Running <strong>My</strong> <strong>webMethods</strong> <strong>Server</strong> from the Command Line<br />

There are times when it is useful to start and stop the server from the command line.<br />

Starting the server this way, for example, allows you to use debug mode so you can record<br />

or display server activity. There are several commands you can use to control operation of<br />

the server, as described in the following procedure.<br />

To control the server from the command line<br />

1 At a command line prompt, type the following command to move to the server’s bin<br />

directory:<br />

cd <strong>webMethods</strong>_install_dir/MWS/bin<br />

2 Type the following command:<br />

For Windows: mws.bat -switch -switch ... command<br />

For UNIX: mws.sh -switch -switch ... command<br />

where switch is any of the following:<br />

Switch Description<br />

‐s servername The name of the server instance. Not required if you are<br />

controlling the default server. You can find the server instances<br />

on a machine by looking here:<br />

<strong>webMethods</strong>_install_dir/MWS/server<br />

‐n nodename In a clustered environment, the nodename assigned to the<br />

server instance. Not required if the server is running<br />

standalone, or if it is the master node of a cluster. See<br />

Chapter 10, “<strong>My</strong> <strong>webMethods</strong> <strong>Server</strong> Clustering” for<br />

information on clusters.<br />

‐d[ebug] Starts the server in debug mode. DEBUG statements appear in<br />

the console window and a Java debug listener is open on port<br />

5000.<br />

and command is any of the following:<br />

Command Description<br />

run Starts the server in the same console window.<br />

start Starts the server in a new console window.<br />

stop Stops a running server.<br />

restart Stops a running server and then starts it again.<br />
