Professional, Friendly Service – NO JOB TOO SMALL!
Cabinet gave green light for library consultation
Gloucestershire residents are able to have their say on the draft library proposals. Gloucestershire County
Council’s Cabinet agreed to start a fresh consultation into the draft library strategy on 30th January.
The six-week consultation will last until 11 th March and Cabinet will then look at the feedback before making
a decision at the end of March.
The new draft library strategy was published in January and details a library service that includes a virtual
library and an outreach programme for specific groups.
It also involves a network of libraries including:
1.Main libraries – nine libraries open six days a week
2. Local libraries – 12 libraries open five days a week – with options for flexibility to suit local needs of which
Quedgeley is one and where the opening hours have reverted to the original ones with no loss of service.
3. Partnership Libraries – 10 libraries run by the county in partnership with communities. Offer between12
and 21 hours of county library service. Building on the principle of sharing buildings with other groups to
create a one stop shop for public services with the library remaining in county control.
4. Community Offer Libraries – seven libraries available to the community under an enhanced Big Community
Offer
As part of the consultation, the council will be asking people what they think we should do with mobile
libraries and what level of support is needed through a new enhanced Big Community Offer scheme.
People will also be asked for their feedback on mobile libraries, which are currently underused and
expensive to run - the average cost per borrower is £76.70 per year.
However, they provide a service in areas where the council doesn’t have existing library cover so it is
exploring options and demand for joint public sector mobile services as part of the consultation.
