County Council Jottings
Gloucestershire County Council announced an investment package worth over £100m, designed to help
get Gloucestershire’s economy moving. The package includes both Government and County Council
funding, and will see major boosts to the County’s infrastructure, measures to help young people get jobs
and help for first time buyers to get a foot on the property ladder. It also includes £7.5m plans to roll out
superfast broadband across Gloucestershire – helping to attract and maintain businesses in the county.
If all goes according to plan, the County Council’s share of council tax bills could be frozen for the second
year in a row. The County Council’s Cabinet approved plans that will freeze council tax. Hopefully, it will
gain the seal of approval from the full council.
The County Council will once again waive the cost of applying for a road closure for people who want to
celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee. Across the UK, people will be holding street parties between 2 nd and 5 th June
to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s 60 years on the throne. This means that roads may need to be closed to
traffic for safety reasons. In Gloucestershire, it normally costs £75 to apply to the county council for a road
closure so an event can take place on the public highway. But to ensure that people are not put off from
hosting their own celebrations within their communities, the council has decided to waive this fee once
again this year. To apply for a road closure, email streetworks@gloucestershire.gov.uk or write to
Streetworks Team, Gloucestershire County Council, Westgate Street, Gloucester, GL1 2TH.
