four year nonprofit
leadership training
program.
Through a combination

tives, institute participants are
able to enhance their own organizational
management skills and
add new fuel to their organizations.
• Art teacher Laura Dunn, of
Teasley Middle School, received
an award of excellence
for her participation in Youth
Art Month 2008. The award was
presented April 25 at the Georgia
Art Education Association spring
luncheon at St. Simons Island.
• The Biotechnology Institute
in Arlington, Va., named Amy
Martin, a teacher at
Creekview High School, in
Canton, as a finalist for the
2009 Genzyme-Life Technologies
Biotech Educator Award.

Institute to recognize
leading
high school educators
who are
bringing
biotechnology
to their class-

• Christine Lauer recently received
a $5,000 Lowe’s Toolbox
grant. The environmental
science and biology teacher at
Woodstock High School will use
the proceeds to teach experimental
design using plants.
• Mary Laing, a
Reinhardt College
staff member for
more than four
years, received the
2009 Reinhardt
College Bridge
Award at a faculty
senate meeting on Laing
April 14. Laing currently
serves as support services
coordinator in the Office of Fi-
nance and Administration. She
resides in the Lake Arrowhead.
The award is given on a yearly
basis to a staff member in recognition
and appreciation of outstanding
service and commitment
to the faculty and students of the
college.
• Cherokee County Fire and
Emergency Services promoted
a firefighter during ceremonies
at Station
8, located in Holly
Springs May 5.
Mike Caglioni was
promoted to the
rank of sergeant.
Caglioni came to
work for the fire department
in November
2005. He lives in
Waleska with his wife, Rollins,
and his two sons, Carson and Tanner.
• The Professional Association
of Georgia Educators invited
Cherokee educators Nick
Zomer, of Dean Rusk Middle
School, and Katie Sobelewski,
of Creekland Middle School,
to present at the organization’s
June conference in Atlanta,
“Designing Engaging
Schools: How to put the joy
back into teaching.”
• The Department of Corrections
presented Shannon
Chastain with the Cynthia
Floyd Award at the Fifth Annual
GDC Awards program
May 27 at Tift College
in Forsyth.
Chastain serves as a

in the Canton
Probation Office.
