Dr. Beanes' sister, Millicent, married James Alexander Magruder<br />
who were <strong>the</strong> parents <strong>of</strong> Dr. William Beanes Magruder, a distinguished<br />
physician and Mayor <strong>of</strong> Washington City in 1857-'58.<br />
Eleanor, widow <strong>of</strong> John Smith Magruder, died intestate and<br />
without administration upon her estate. Both are buried at Dun-<br />
blane with tombstones inscribed:<br />

who departed this life<br />
<strong>the</strong> 7th <strong>of</strong> April, 1825<br />
aged 58 years.<br />
An honest man's <strong>the</strong> noblest work <strong>of</strong> God.<br />

ELEANOR MAGRUDER<br />
who departed this life Aug. 1852.<br />
in her 87th year.<br />
Margaret Ellen Mc<strong>Gregor</strong>, daughter <strong>of</strong> John Smith Magruder<br />
and Eleanor Clarke, born Hall, was born March 24, 1800.<br />
October 23, 1827 she married Dr. Jesse Ewell, who was born at<br />
Dumfries, Prince William County, Virginia, in March, 1802.<br />
Having spent a year in <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> medicine at Jefferson Medical<br />
College, Philadelphia, Jesse Ewell was <strong>the</strong> first student to matriculate<br />
in <strong>the</strong> medical department <strong>of</strong> Columbian College, now George<br />
Washington University. Although entitled to be graduated a year<br />
later he was persuaded to waive <strong>the</strong> privilege, in consideration <strong>of</strong><br />
which <strong>the</strong> College gave him free tuition for <strong>the</strong> ensuing year and<br />
graduated him M. D., with five o<strong>the</strong>rs, in 1826, <strong>the</strong> first class graduating<br />
from <strong>the</strong> institution.<br />
Dr. and Mrs. Ewell resided in Washington City for three years,<br />
after which <strong>the</strong>y moved to Dunblane, Prince William County, Virginia,<br />
where she died July 8, 1890, Dr. Ewell surviving until January<br />
19, 1897.<br />
Margaret Ellen (Mc<strong>Gregor</strong>) Ewell was <strong>the</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> five children<br />
who reached majority:<br />
John Smith Magruder Ewell, born August 2, 1828, married, November<br />
2, 1852, Helen Woods Mc<strong>Gregor</strong>, a first cousin; and, October<br />
23, 1856, Alice J. Tyler.<br />
Issue, first wife. Dr. Jesse Ewell, <strong>the</strong> originator <strong>of</strong> this <strong>Society</strong>,<br />
elected Scribe upon its organization, 1909, and still holds <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice,<br />
which up to 1912 embraced <strong>the</strong> duties <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> present Treasurer.
