Career Cluster 1<br />
ARTS, MEDIA, AND COMMUNICATION<br />
CROSS-CLUSTER SKILL AREAS<br />
In addition to focusing on a Pathway, students gain transferable skills across Career Clusters. These cross-cluster<br />
skills broaden a student’s understanding <strong>of</strong> how different <strong>career</strong>s connect and intersect.<br />
• Information Technology and Communications Support: Telecommunications, data and computer support<br />
services, including communications systems, devices, and equipment, computer s<strong>of</strong>tware and hardware, and<br />
Internet services.<br />
• Financial Management and Accounting: Business support services in finance and accounting.<br />
• Purchasing and Procurement: Purchasing <strong>of</strong> materials and equipment for organizations involved in performing<br />
and distributing.<br />
• Legal Services: Legal services that address all aspects <strong>of</strong> the business, including purchasing contracts,<br />
leases, human resources, and risk management.<br />
• Public Policy/Government Relations: Managing government communications, lobbying, and managing<br />
relationships with government agencies at the federal, state, and local levels.<br />
• Human Resources/Training: Business activities involved in recruitment and hiring <strong>of</strong> employees, performance<br />
reviews, compensation and benefits management, labor relations, and compliance with government laws<br />
and regulations; training and development <strong>of</strong> employees, from orientation to pr<strong>of</strong>essional and management<br />
development.<br />
• Marketing and Sales: Market analysis, advertising and promotion, sales, and customer service.<br />
• Health and Safety/Environmental Management: Managing and improving health and safety, and maintaining<br />
compliance with legal and regulatory requirements, including OSHA, EPA, and CDC.<br />

HIGHLIGHT<br />
ARTS, MEDIA, AND COMMUNICATION<br />
<strong>Maryland</strong> school systems have achieved national accreditation for their Graphic and Printing Programs<br />
and an opportunity for students to achieve national certification through PrintED. PrintED,<br />
administered by the Graphic Arts <strong>Education</strong> and Research Foundation (GAERF�), is a national<br />
accreditation program, based on industry standards, for graphic communications courses <strong>of</strong> study at<br />
the secondary and postsecondary levels. Program completers can receive up to nine articulated<br />
credits towards an Associate <strong>of</strong> Arts degree, which further articulates to a Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts degree in<br />
graphic design.<br />
